Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries, including healthcare, materials and aerospace. We are seeking to hire a Quantum Operator to operate our quantum processors. Passionate about helping create technologies which can change the world? We may be the right place for you, so get in touch!\nWhat You’ll Accomplish\nOperate, monitor, and maintain ion-trap quantum computing hardware and experimental systems. \nPerform calibration, optimisation, and characterisation of quantum hardware, control systems, and experimental procedures using established methods. \nSupport the development, integration, and testing of new quantum hardware and experimental systems, working closely with physicists and engineering teams. \nCollect, analyse, and report experimental data to support system performance and troubleshooting. \nEnsure reliable and repeatable operation through careful attention to detail, hands-on problem solving, and following established procedures. \nRequirements\nThe Three Most Critical Attributes We’ll Use to Compare Candidates:\nStrong hands-on experience with quantum control experiments:Experience operating and troubleshooting AMO-based quantum systems (e.g., trapped ions, neutral atoms, or related platforms), with practical exposure to key experimental tasks such as laser cooling, state preparation, quantum control, and measurement. \n\nHigh reliability and attention to detail:Ability to follow experimental procedures carefully, perform repeatable calibrations and measurements, identify abnormal system behaviour, and maintain accurate records. \n\nStrong teamwork and practical problem-solving:Ability to work closely with physicists and engineers to operate systems, support hardware integration and testing, and solve experimental issues efficiently. \n\nMust-have:\nPhD in physics, quantum technologies, AMO physics, or a closely related field, orMaster’s degree in AMO physics plus at least 2 years of relevant hands-on experimental experience in a laboratory setting. \n\nExperience with experimental quantum technologies, preferably involving ion-trap or neutral-atom systems, or other optical-based quantum systems. \nPractical experience with one or more of the following: laser and optical systems, RF/microwave control, vacuum systems, or high-precision imaging. \nUnderstanding of quantum control, state preparation, measurement, and experimental calibration. \nGood data analysis skills and experience using Python or similar programming tools. \nAbility to follow, improve, and document experimental procedures for reliable system operation. \nCollaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively across physics and engineering teams to solve technical problems. \nNice-to-have:\nExperience working with surface ion traps. \nExperience with high vacuum and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems, including vacuum chambers, ion pumps, and bakeout procedures. \nExperience with automated experimental control, calibration, or measurement systems. \nExperience with hardware integration, system testing, or commissioning of new experimental equipment. \nFamiliarity with Git, data management, or laboratory automation tools. \nPlease feel encouraged to apply even if you don't match all the requirements of our job description. We would love to receive your application even if you think you're only a partial match.\nBenefits\nCompetitive salary \nMeaningful equity participation \nFlexible holiday allowance (28 days minimum) \nFlexible working \n10% matching pension \nGenerous parental support policy \nPrivate health / dental insurance & group life insurance \n£2,000 annual personal development budget \nRelocation support \nWe are committed to nurturing diversity and inclusion At Universal Quantum, we’re passionate about working with and for all kinds of minds. We are committed to building an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, and we hold ourselves accountable through continuous improvement, transparency, and the way we design our hiring and working practices. We welcome team members from all backgrounds and actively work to ensure everyone can flourish.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4347,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":2,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Dental insurance","Equity","Flexible schedule","Life insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":true,"industries":["Manufacturing","Science & Engineering","Quantum Science & Computing"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-06T03:59:31Z"}],"liveness":{"score":10,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.278,"p_room":0.35,"age_days":50,"expected_fill_days":21,"reasons":["conf:6","stale_co","win:tail"],"computed_at":"2026-10-01T05:45:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/universal-quantum-quantum-operator","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/universal-quantum-quantum-operator.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-02T01:25:03Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1654,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":3346,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-03T00:00:00Z"}}}
