Job Description Summary

This position provides support for the daily operations and activities of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Labs (CSSL) in the School of Nursing related to lab learning and simulation delivery. This includes setting up the teaching and learning spaces with appropriate equipment and materials. The Clinical Simulation Lab Technician’s role also includes the maintenance and repair of related resources and equipment, software, hardware, multimedia and A/V equipment used in the lab and simulation rooms (including debriefing spaces).

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director, Experiential Education, and works interdependently with staff and faculty in the CSSL.

Works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students within the School of Nursing’s MN-NP program (Surrey and Point Grey campus).

Works in a nursing education laboratory (both Surrey and Point Grey campus) that simulates real-world patient care and clinical practice environments.

Supports clinical skills and simulation activities across the School’s undergraduate and graduate programs as required

Hours may fluctuate depending on teaching, simulation, research, and operational requirements and may include evenings and Saturdays.

Work Performed

· Sets up, maintains (including regular cleaning and inspection for broken or damaged parts), operates, troubleshoots, and resolves technical issues related to lab equipment and simulators (including full body manikins and partial task trainers). This may include operating equipment/simulator during a teaching session.

· Ensures labs and simulation rooms are appropriately set up in advance as indicated by course, research, and non-course/research related (e.g., tours, open house) activity. This also implies assisting with dismantling of set up at the end of each activity.

· Coordinates with course leads, simulation educators, researchers to setup furnishings, supplies, and equipment to simulate, as closely as possible, scenarios found in the practice setting as deemed necessary by the course/learner objectives or research purpose.

· Ensures rooms are cleared of supplies and equipment following each lab (supervised and unsupervised) and simulation sessions

· Communicates with manufacturers regarding maintenance, repairs, updates and technology changes; and requests quotes from suppliers

· Acquires and maintains skills and knowledge related to existing and newly acquired technologies used in the CSSL.

· Provides an orientation to faculty members, nursing practice educators, simulation educators, and others (not excluding the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab Learning Coordinator) of the technical aspects of operating equipment and/or simulators

· Maintains the physical facilities and digital technology associated with the CSSL (not excluding storage, rooms, simulation suites, skills labs).

· Maintains and promotes adherence to policies and procedures related to the safe operation of the equipment and facilities.

· Reinforces and maintains high ethical standards of conduct and procedures to assist in ensuring the security of the CSSL technology assets and data.

· Provides ongoing support and orientation to CSSL members (including student workers), ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to succeed.

· Assist in the onboarding process of new CSSL members (including student workers), facilitating their integration into the team culture and workflow.

· Offers proactive assistance to colleagues (including student workers), helping them overcome challenges, resolve issues, and achieve their goals.

· Consults with the AD and other team members (e.g., course leads, CSSL Learning Coordinator), to ensure CSSL policies, procedures, and guidelines are up to date and reflect best practice.

· Perform general cleaning and upkeep of CSSL, such as scheduling housekeeping and laundry services; making beds; organizing supply carts; general tidiness and organization of lab and simulation rooms;

· In coordination with the AD, reviews and implements changes in work processes to improve quality-of-service.

· As needed, act as back up for the CSSL Learning Coordinator

· Adheres to all protocols and operating procedures of the CSSL and carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the role.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Lack of effort and/or error in judgment would result in safety risks for faculty, students and staff working in the lab and have negative impact on student learning experiences.

Works independently to consistently apply principles of planning, organization and time management in setting priorities and executing assigned workflow.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction of the Associate Director, Experiential Education,

Work progress reviewed by Associate Director, Experiential Education, to ensure conformity to established principles and procedures.

Role requires extensive team collaboration to effectively provide teaching and learning support in the CSSL for students, faculty and staff.

Work may be allocated by the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab Learning Coordinator.

Supervision Given

This position may supervise student workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer experience working in an acute care clinical environment or nursing clinical skills lab environment that simulates a real practice setting where responsibilities included setting up the lab and ensuring equipment and supplies for clinical skills teaching and learning activities.
  • Familiarity with operational, facilities, and equipment requirements of a nursing skills/simulation laboratory;
  • Possess working knowledge of handling nursing equipment and supplies.
  • The candidate should have the ability to remain flexible in an advanced technical and computerized environment; possess strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities as they relate to minor repairs of hardware and software, web-based and simulation technology.
  • Have a strong familiarity and adaptability with a wide variety of clinical simulation technology products and applications, with a focus on seamless integration and support across different platforms.
  • The successful candidate will be proficient in PC and Mac-based computer hardware and software applications as well as effectively use e-mail and Microsoft Office products at an intermediate level (e.g., Teams, Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel); Ability to use web-based resources at an intermediate level (e.g. YouTube, social media, searching and retrieval of information); Resolves escalated problems of technical support. Identifies root causes. Sets up and integrates new and enhanced information systems; Ability to learn, build, maintain, evaluate and troubleshoot existing software and develop user friendly software; Understanding of key trends and players in the simulation industry, particularly with respect to systems and applications.
  • Candidates should have knowledge of medical terminology and be able to communicate with that terminology.

  • Ability to work calmly with frequent interruptions under pressure during busy periods.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and use good judgment.

  • Ability to lift or move heavy objects, such as moving manikins (adult and child size simulators) and other equipment relevant to educational and research activities.
