Job Description Summary

The Department of Engineering Information Technology in the A. James Clark School of Engineering seeks an Assistant Director of Instructional Technologies to provide operational, technical, and administrative leadership for the School’s instructional technology and audiovisual services.

The Assistant Director manages daily operations and supervises four full-time staff members supporting classrooms, studios, laboratories, conference rooms, distance education, lecture capture, video production, streaming, and event technologies. The position establishes service standards, coordinates staff and resources, supports budgeting and purchasing, manages technology projects, and collaborates with faculty, staff, University partners, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.

This position leads the planning, design, procurement, installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of audiovisual and instructional technologies. Responsibilities include conducting site assessments, developing technical requirements, coordinating vendors and contractors, overseeing installations and renovations, and inspecting completed work.

The Assistant Director works with faculty, staff, students, School leadership, University technology organizations, remote-site personnel, and external partners to identify needs, resolve service issues, and improve support. The position monitors service quality and usage, develops technology roadmaps and equipment-replacement plans, evaluates emerging technologies, and recommends solutions that improve instructional effectiveness, accessibility, reliability, operational efficiency, and user experience. The Assistant Director also manages relationships with wireless service providers, serves as the unit’s central point of contact for spectrum-related matters and service offerings, analyzes and reports usage metrics, and promotes services to support revenue generation.

The Assistant Director supports distance, online, and technology-enabled education by coordinating the technologies and production services needed for accessible instructional content, lecture capture, video-based learning, and remote instruction. The position also provides operational and technical oversight for studio, audiovisual, video-production, streaming, recording, and event services.

Although assigned staff generally support event and production activities, the Assistant Director may provide hands-on assistance-including equipment setup, cabling, troubleshooting, camera operation, and recording-when operational needs require.

The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland catalyzes high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that address the 21st-century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, accelerating entrepreneurship, and transforming research and learning activities into innovations that benefit millions.

Physical Demands: The position involves a combination of office, technical, and field-based work and requires regular movement among studios, classrooms, instructional technology spaces, and other campus facilities. The employee regularly walks between multiple studios within the primary work location and, as needed, to other campus buildings to inspect work, assess facilities, coordinate with contractors and vendors, and conduct facility walk-through for audiovisual installers and project bidders.

The position requires attendance at events and may involve hands-on audiovisual and production support when operational needs require, including equipment setup and breakdown, cabling, system installation and troubleshooting, camera operation, video recording, and other production activities. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support instructional activities, special events, and technology installations.

Physical activities may include periods of sitting, standing, and walking, as well as bending, reaching, stooping, and working around audiovisual equipment and cabling. The position requires manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to operate computers, cameras, audiovisual systems, production equipment, and related technologies.

The employee may occasionally be required to lift, carry, position, push, or move audiovisual and production equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
