Welcome to the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, the first and largest bilingual medical faculty in Canada. Purpose:

Performs basic and routine tasks, including general laboratory maintenance, routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and glassware. Under close supervision, provides general technical assistance and/or carries out routine tests using various types of equipment, and records results of analysis.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Assists with general laboratory operation and maintenance including inventory, stocking supplies, cleaning and organizing labs.

  • Prepares media and performs other simple preparation tasks.

  • Washes and autoclaves glassware; prepares equipment and glassware.

  • Performs routine laboratory procedures as required.

  • Records test results but does not interpret beyond what is necessary to indicate the need for modifications in procedures. Notes unusual occurrences.

  • May collect samples for testing using a straightforward sampling procedure. Assists with routine data collection, sampling, identification, sorting and preparation tasks.

  • Maintains research-related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols. Refers complications or problems to technologist or technician.

  • May assist in setting up laboratories.

  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of standard maintenance techniques.

  • Minimum of experience in a related field.

  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions and to operate laboratory equipment.
