This position plays an important role in preparing steel products for rolling or reheating by removing surface impurities and abnormal conditions while maintaining a safe, productive, and clean work environment.\nThe ideal candidate is dependable, comfortable working in a heavy industrial environment, able to work a rotating schedule, and willing to learn and operate a variety of industrial equipment.\nPOSITION OVERVIEW\nThe Grinder operator is responsible for grinding impurities and abnormal surface conditions from steel ingots and other material while removing the minimum amount of good metal necessary. The position requires attention to detail, good eye/hand coordination, mechanical aptitude, and ability to follow work order instructions.\nThis position will begin as a Utility role. Employees will receive training and gain experience until they meet the qualifications required to advance into the posted position title.\nEmployees will operate grinders, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity.\nBASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:\nSet up and position material for grinding and conditioning\nOperate Gantry, Midwest, and Tysman grinders\nOperate forklifts and cranes as necessary\nChange grinding wheels as required\nSafely operate grinding equipment and follow established operating procedures\nCondition material according to mill work order instructions\nInspect material and notify the supervisor of non-conforming product\nReport production, delays, and other operational information as required\nReport equipment problems or maintenance concerns promptly\nMaintain a clean, organized, and safe work area\nWork safely and productively while meeting production expectations\nPerform other duties as assigned\nSAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION\nThis is a safety-sensitive position in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. Employees are expected to follow all company rules and procedures, properly use required PPE, and immediately report unsafe conditions or equipment concerns.\nWORK ENVIRONMENT:\nGrinding equipment and sparks while inside a cab operated grinding machine\nHeat and hot steel\nNoise and dust\nHeavy machinery\nForklifts and overhead cranes\nMoving steel products\nRequired personal protective equipment\nEmployees must be comfortable working in an industrial environment and following all safety requirements.\nSKILLS:\nStrong work ethic and reliable attendance\nAbility to arrive at work on time and be ready to work\nGood eye/hand coordination\nMechanical aptitude and willingness to learn industrial equipment\nAbility to follow written and verbal instructions\nStrong attention to detail\nAbility to work in a fast-paced production environment\nAbility to work independently and as part of a team\nAbility to maintain productivity while managing changing priorities\nCommitment to workplace safety and quality\nEXPERIENCE:\nPrevious experience in a steel-related or heavy manufacturing environment preferred\nExperience operating grinders, forklifts, cranes, or other industrial equipment is preferred\nManufacturing or warehouse experience is a plus\nEDUCATION/TRAINING\nHigh School diploma or GED is required\nEmployees will receive training on the Gantry, Midwest, and Tysman grinders and other equipment required for the position\nSCHEDULE:\n12-hour shifts:\n7:00AM-7:00PM\n7:00PM-7:00AM\nTimken schedule:\n7 days on/3 days off\n7 nights on/4 days off\nEmployees must be flexible to work both day and night shifts. There are no permanent assigned day or night shifts\nWeekend and holiday work may be required\nOvertime may be required based on operational needs\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:\nAbility to stand and walk for extended periods\nAbility to work in a hot environment\nAbility to bend, reach, climb, and work around industrial equipment\nAbility to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds\nAbility to safely operate and work around forklifts, cranes, and grinding equipment\nAbility to wear required PPE for extended periods\nAbility to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation\nTRAINING & GROWTH\nAs you become qualified for additional roles and responsibilities, you will have opportunities to advance and earn higher pay.\nEmployees will receive hands-on training to safely operate the equipment and perform the responsibilities of the position.
