We are an early-stage startup founded by Stanford physicians.\nWe are seeking a talented and motivated frontend engineer to join our team and play a key role in helping build our patient mobile app and physician facing front ends.\nThis is a fully remote position.\nWho You Are\nYou are an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex integration problems at the boundaries between systems. You are comfortable taking an integration from initial technical discovery through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing production support.\nYou have a strong backend engineering foundation, are highly proficient in modern Python, and understand how to build reliable APIs and services. You know that successful integrations require more than connecting two endpoints-you think carefully about authentication, data mapping, retries, idempotency, failure modes, monitoring, security, and data integrity.\nWhat You'll Do\nDesign, build, and maintain critical integrations between UpDoc and health systems, EHRs, healthcare technology platforms, and other external systems and services.\n\nOwn integration projects end to end, from technical discovery and architecture through development, testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance.\n\nPartner directly with health system IT and technical teams, EHR vendors, implementation partners, and other external technology providers to understand requirements and successfully deploy integrations.\n\nDesign and implement reliable internal and external APIs and backend services using modern, type-hinted Python, FastAPI, and Pydantic.\n\nWork with healthcare interoperability standards and technologies such as FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, and vendor-specific APIs as integration requirements evolve.\n\nDesign secure and reliable data flows between UpDoc and external systems, with particular attention to data integrity, privacy, authentication, authorization, and clinical reliability.\n\nTranslate data and workflows between systems with different schemas, APIs, capabilities, and technical constraints.\n\nBuild integrations that gracefully handle real-world failure scenarios, including network interruptions, duplicate events, retries, timeouts, rate limits, incomplete or inconsistent source data, and downstream system failures.\n\nDiagnose complex production integration issues using API payloads, healthcare data resources, application logs, network requests, system traces, and other debugging tools.\n\nEstablish monitoring, observability, alerting, and operational practices that make integration failures easy to identify, diagnose, and resolve.\n\nDevelop comprehensive automated tests for integrations, including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing.\n\nBuild reusable integration components, tooling, documentation, and architectural patterns that make future health system deployments faster and more reliable.\n\nCollaborate closely with Engineering, Product, Clinical, Security, and other internal teams to ensure integrations support UpDoc's product and clinical workflows.\n\nParticipate in architecture discussions, code reviews, technical planning, deployment, and production troubleshooting.\n\nDocument integration architecture, data flows, technical decisions, operational procedures, and external dependencies.\n\nContribute to UpDoc's HIPAA, SOC 2, privacy, security, and healthcare compliance requirements as they relate to integrations and healthcare data.\n\nWhat You'll Need\n5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience in backend development, systems integration, or API engineering.\n\nStrong professional experience with modern, type-hinted Python.\n\nDemonstrated experience designing, building, and supporting production integrations with third-party systems and APIs.\n\nExperience developing production APIs and backend services using FastAPI, Pydantic, or comparable technologies.\n\nStrong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, authentication and authorization, webhooks, networking, databases, and distributed systems.\n\nExperience working with external APIs where you do not control the upstream or downstream system and must account for their technical constraints and failure modes.\n\nExperience designing reliable data flows and handling challenges such as retries, idempotency, asynchronous processing, data mapping, rate limits, and partial failures.\n\nStrong production debugging and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to investigate problems across multiple systems.\n\nExperience designing automated tests for APIs and integrations.\n\nExperience with cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure, and containerized applications.\n\nFamiliarity with CI/CD, observability, monitoring, and modern DevOps practices.\n\nStrong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both internal and external technical stakeholders.\n\nAbility to independently own technically complex projects from discovery through production.\n\nComfort operating in a fast-moving, early-stage startup environment where integration patterns and processes are still being established.\n\nAn interest in improving healthcare through safe, reliable, and thoughtfully designed technology.\n\nHighly Desired\nExperience building integrations with health systems, provider organizations, or healthcare technology companies.\n\nExperience integrating with Epic or other major EHR platforms.\n\nHands-on experience with FHIR, HL7 v2, SMART on FHIR, or other healthcare interoperability standards.\n\nExperience working directly with health system IT, interoperability, interface, or implementation teams.\n\nExperience integrating clinical data, patient data, scheduling, messaging, orders, results, or other healthcare workflows.\n\nExperience designing secure systems that handle protected health information (PHI).\n\nFamiliarity with HIPAA, SOC 2, and security requirements for healthcare software.\n\nExperience with event-driven architectures, message queues, webhooks, or asynchronous integration patterns.\n\nExperience with integration monitoring, contract testing, or tools for managing complex API dependencies.\n\nExperience building integrations in regulated or safety-critical environments where data accuracy and system reliability are particularly important.\n\nExperience in an early-stage startup where you have helped establish integration architecture, tooling, or engineering practices from the ground
