As part of Servicing, the team owns borrower-facing web and mobile experiences, including the Funded Borrower Dashboard, payment journeys, and Sierra, our servicing AI agent. Our mission is to make managing a loan simple, transparent, and empathetic-helping borrowers make payments, find support, and stay on track.\nOur work directly influences borrower trust, payment success, operational efficiency, and Upstart’s financial performance. We partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, Analytics, and Compliance to turn complex servicing needs into intuitive products backed by reliable, scalable systems.\nAs the Senior Engineering Manager, Borrower Experience, you will lead a team of fullstack engineers with ownership across user interfaces, backend services, APIs, and integrations. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will shape technical strategy, develop a high-performing team, and deliver borrower-facing products that balance usability, delivery speed, reliability, and compliance. You will also help modernize our servicing architecture, creating foundations that make it easier to build and improve borrower experiences.\nHow you’ll make an impact\nLead, coach, and grow a team of fullstack engineers delivering borrower-facing web and mobile experiences.\nOwn technical execution across the stack, connecting intuitive user interfaces with reliable backend services, APIs, and servicing systems.\nPartner with Product and Design to improve the Funded Borrower Dashboard, payment journeys, and AI-powered support experiences.\nDefine and execute a multi-quarter technical strategy that advances borrower experience and Servicing priorities.\nGuide architectural decisions and modernization efforts that improve system reliability, observability, maintainability, and development speed.\nCollaborate with cross-functional partners to simplify complex borrower needs and regulatory requirements into clear, accessible product experiences.\nBuild a culture of ownership, product quality, experimentation, and operational excellence, with clear visibility into priorities, delivery risks, and trade-offs.\nMinimum Qualifications\n10-15 years of software engineering experience, including 4-7 years in engineering management.\nExperience leading fullstack engineering teams that build and operate customer-facing products.\nStrong technical depth across frontend architecture, backend services, APIs, distributed systems, and system design.\nDemonstrated ability to partner with Product and Design to deliver intuitive user experiences and measurable business outcomes.\nProven experience leading teams in regulated domains such as fintech, payments, or lending.\nExperience defining and delivering complex technical strategies while balancing product delivery with architectural improvements.\nA strong track record of hiring, coaching, and developing high-performing engineers.\nExcellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to varied audiences.\nPosition location This role is available in the following locations: Remote \nTime zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones. \nTravel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.\nAt Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range.
