At USAA, CICS is a mission critical application crucial for managing high-volume, online transaction processing.\nAs a dedicated Mid-Level Mainframe Infrastructure Engineer - CICS Systems Programmer, you will directly contribute to enabling USAA’s Mission in delivering technology solutions for our members through effective administration of Customer Information Control System (CICS) on the Mainframe.\nThe Individual contributor will be responsible for understanding, maintaining, managing, and troubleshooting CICS system and application issues for the overall CICS environment which is a complex CICS environment with over 700 CICS regions to support. The individual contributor will be instrumental in the ongoing efficacy of customer-facing applications that rely on CICS environment usage and access. The Individual will continue to protect USAA’s members and brand through the execution of effective risk processes and related controls, and maximize operational efficiencies. The individual will share on-call, upgrades, updates, migrations, patching, working with team. The individual contributor will also help support expectations and requirements from the various lines of businesses and will work to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.\nThis role requires an understanding of mainframe technologies. Proficiency in programming languages like JCL and REXX, along with experience in mainframe tools and utilities, is essential. The work environment is typically dynamic and may require after-hours or on-call support to maintain the availability of mission-critical applications.\nWe offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX or Plano, TX.\nRelocation assistance is NOT available for this position.\nWhat you'll do:\nSystem Installation and Maintenance: Installing, configuring, upgrading, and maintaining CICS Transaction Server and related software. This involves applying vendor patches, fixes, and new product releases, often using tools like SMP/E.\nPerformance and Capacity Management: Monitoring CICS system performance, identifying bottlenecks, and tuning CICS regions to meet service level agreements (SLAs). This may involve analyzing performance data using tools such as Intellimagic, RMF and BMC Mainview.\nProblem Resolution: Troubleshooting and debugging complex system and application issues, which can include analyzing system dumps and collaborating with application developers and software vendors for solutions.\nDeveloper Support: Providing technical support to application development teams, which includes setting up and managing CICS regions and defining necessary application resources.\nSystem Integration: Working with other z/OS systems programmers to integrate CICS with other mainframe subsystems, such as DB2 (database management) and MQ (messaging).\nSecurity and Disaster Recovery: Implementing and maintaining CICS security protocols (e.g., using RACF) and assisting in the planning, testing, and execution of disaster recovery procedures.\nAutomation: Developing and implementing automation scripts (e.g., using REXX) to streamline system management and improve efficiency.\nUnder limited supervision, designing scalable IT system infrastructure, implements system changes with consistency and autonomy, and automates service delivery and maintenance tasks; builds monitoring and tooling for systems.\nIndependently, resolving complex technology production issues by troubleshooting IT systems. Identifying opportunities for improvements and makes recommendations to management.\nAnalyzing complex outages and identifying opportunities for system improvements.\nUnderstand the customer and identifying solutions and ideas.\nEvaluating potential Technology solutions with some oversight.\nEnsures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.\nWhat you have:\nBachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.\n4 years of infrastructure experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding to include an understanding of mainframe infrastructure and z/OS.\nProficient level of business acumen in the areas of scripting and programming languages such as JCL, REXX and other mainframe scripting languages.\nProficient level of business acumen in the areas of business operations, risk management, industry practices and emerging trends.\nKnowledge and understanding of designing scalable IT system infrastructures, implementing system changes, or automating service delivery and maintenance tasks.\nWhat sets you apart:\nInstallation and Maintenance Proficiency: Strong expertise in mainframe product installation, configuration, and maintenance, often including Independent Software Vendor (ISV) installations and upgrades.\nSMP/E Proficiency: Experience with SMP/E (System Modification Program/Extended) for installing and maintaining software.\nz/OS Expertise: In-depth knowledge of z/OS operating systems, including configuration, maintenance, and tuning.\nz/OS Subsystems: Understanding of other z/OS subsystems such as DB2, MQ, JES2, z/OS connect, IMS and TCP/IP.\nPerformance Tuning and Monitoring: Experience with performance tuning and the use of monitoring tools (e.g., RMF, Intellimagic, BMC Mainview).\nFamiliarity with Assembler, and PL/I is also beneficial.\nSecurity: Experience with security, often using RACF or equivalent tools.\nAutomation and Scheduling: Familiarity with automation tools, job scheduling, and monitoring tools.\nDisaster Recovery: Experience with disaster recovery planning and testing.\nMainframe Hardware: Understanding of mainframe hardware and architecture to optimize system performance.\nUS military experience gained through military service or gained as a military spouse / domestic partner.\nCompensation range: The salary range for this position is: $93,770 - $179,240.\nUSAA does not provide visa sponsorship for this role.
