This role will oversee core accounting operations, tax and compliance, financial reporting, audit activities, and accounting process improvements.\nWe are looking for a seasoned accounting professional who can operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and confidently navigate complex accounting and tax matters. The ideal candidate combines deep technical accounting expertise with strong leadership, business acumen, and a continuous-improvement mindset.\nThis is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate will not simply oversee the accounting function-they will understand the details, identify opportunities to improve processes, develop their team, and serve as a trusted partner to the CFO and business leaders across UWorld.\nGeneral Accounting & Financial Operations - 40%\nOversee day-to-day general accounting activities and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger.\nEnsure timely and accurate processing of positive pay transactions and other banking-related accounting activities.\nLead and support the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes.\nReview complex and non-routine accounting transactions and provide guidance on appropriate accounting treatment.\nMonitor accounting activities to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and UWorld's accounting policies and procedures.\nSupport annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.\nPartner with department leaders to monitor budgets, analyze financial performance, and identify opportunities for improved financial management.\nReview financial activity and investigate unusual transactions, variances, and trends.\nEstablish priorities, assign projects, and provide direction to accounting team members to ensure accuracy and timely completion of work.\nServe as a resource to accounting staff on complex accounting issues and problem resolution.\nIdentify potential accounting risks and proactively recommend solutions.\nTax & Compliance - 20%\nOversee monthly, quarterly, and annual tax compliance activities to ensure timely and accurate filings.\nPrepare and/or review federal and state income tax filings and related entity/member tax requirements.\nPrepare and/or review monthly sales and payroll tax filings.\nPrepare quarterly income tax estimates and related calculations.\nManage state and local tax registrations, business licenses, payroll withholding accounts, sales tax registrations, and related compliance requirements.\nMonitor changes in federal and state tax requirements and assess their impact on UWorld.\nRespond to federal, state, and local tax notices and coordinate timely resolution.\nPartner with external tax advisors and other professional service providers as needed.\nMaintain organized and accurate documentation supporting tax filings and compliance activities.\nIdentify opportunities to improve UWorld's tax processes, controls, and compliance practices.\nFinancial Reporting & Audit - 20%\nOwn and oversee accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close activities.\nEnsure the timely preparation and reporting of entity-level and consolidated financial information.\nReview financial statements and supporting schedules for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.\nPerform and/or oversee monthly account reconciliations and variance analysis.\nDevelop and maintain an organized, efficient system for financial records and supporting documentation.\nCoordinate with external auditors throughout the annual audit process.\nPrepare and review audit schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor requests.\nServe as a key point of contact for management regarding financial reporting questions and special reporting requests.\nIdentify opportunities to strengthen internal controls and financial reporting processes.\nProcess Improvement & Accounting Operations - 10%\nUWorld is a growing organization, and we are looking for someone who will continuously challenge the status quo and look for better ways to work.\nEvaluate existing accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.\nDevelop and implement accounting policies, procedures, controls, and best practices.\nRecommend improvements to accounting systems, workflows, and reporting processes.\nLead or support implementation of new accounting processes, systems, and functionality.\nIdentify opportunities to automate manual processes and reduce unnecessary work.\nEstablish appropriate accounting methods and ensure consistent application of policies and procedures.\nInvestigate process breakdowns, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.\nPartner with the CFO on special projects, financial analyses, and strategic process improvement initiatives.\nHelp build accounting infrastructure that can support UWorld's continued growth.\nLeadership & People Development - 10%\nLead, coach, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team.\nCreate a collaborative environment that encourages accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth.\nEstablish clear goals and performance expectations for direct reports.\nConduct regular coaching and performance discussions and provide meaningful feedback.\nDelegate responsibilities appropriately while maintaining accountability for results.\nServe as a trusted resource to team members for complex accounting questions, problem-solving, and decision-making.\nIdentify opportunities for team members to expand their skills and take on greater responsibility.\nRecognize high performance and proactively identify opportunities for succession planning and talent development.\nPartner with Human Resources on employee relations and performance matters when appropriate.\nLead by example through strong judgment, professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.\nRequirements\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.\nActive CPA license required.\n10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience as a Staff Accountant, Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or similar role.\n5+ years of people management experience.\nExtensive experience with corporate income tax, multi-state payroll tax, and sales tax.\nStrong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.\nDemonstrated experience overseeing month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.\nExperience managing external audits and working with external accounting/tax advisors.\nStrong understanding of general ledger structure and financial statement preparation.\nExperience with accounting/ERP systems such as Sage Intacct, NetSuite, QuickBooks, or similar platforms.\nAdvanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.\nBig Four public accounting experience is strongly preferred.\nThe Ideal Candidate\nThe right person for this role is more than a technically strong accountant.
