1st Shift (Monday - Friday 6:30am to 3:00pm).
A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Galvanizing Services Technician is an individual contributor position responsible for performing welding and fabrication tasks, operating forklifts and overhead bridge cranes, and conducting quality inspections throughout the galvanizing process. The incumbent ensures all materials are properly prepared, welded, moved, inspected, and documented according to Valmont and customer quality standards. The technician must successfully complete the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) Inspection Course and work safely while wearing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Essential Functions:
- Perform welding and fabrication tasks including cutting, grinding, and fitting to prepare material for galvanizing.
- Operate forklifts to safely move material.
- Operate radio-controlled overhead bridge cranes to move suspended and non-suspended loads.
- Conduct inspections on incoming, in-process, and finished materials to ensure compliance with ASTM A123 and customer specifications.
- Complete the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) Inspection Course within the first 30 days of employment.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all safety protocols.
- Work in a non-temperature-controlled environment with exposure to heat, cold, smoke, dust, and particulates.
- Communicate effectively with crew leaders, supervisors, and coworkers.
Important Details about the Role:
- Must demonstrate proficiency in welding safety, crane operation safety, and forklift operation safety.
- Must regularly use a computer for email communication, documentation, and basic data entry.
- Must be able to read and interpret welding symbols, material drawings, safety rules, and operating manuals.
- Must maintain strong awareness of hazards associated with welding, crane operation, and galvanizing processes.
- May assist in training new employees on welding, inspections, and material handling procedures.
- Must be able to work overtime as needed.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
- Three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
- Six (6) months of welding experience or equivalent training.
- Ability to pass level 1 welding capability test conducted on site.
- Ability to recognize hazardous substances and to know basic employee responsibilities for chemical safety.
- Perform duties of Material Handler and Crew Leader functions, as needed.
- Assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping.
- Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Ability to write and perform addition and subtraction of whole numbers.
- Ability to distinguish colors for inspection and safety purposes.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, with frequent lifts of 25-35 pounds.
- Ability to spend 75% of the workday standing or walking, and 25% bending, kneeling, climbing, or lifting.
- High awareness for safety and ability to wear all required PPE.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess integrity and the drive to excel.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Technical coursework in welding or metal fabrication.
- Six (6) months of experience operating forklifts or overhead cranes.
- Six (6) months of experience performing quality inspections.
- Bilingual fluency (English & Spanish).
