Our mission is to rapidly expand America's maritime output by 100x.\nOur team works directly with large industrial robots and real manufacturing equipment at our Austin facility. The systems we build will ultimately be deployed across shipyards and industrial facilities throughout the country.\nAbout Valstad\nValstad is rebuilding how ships are made.\nAmerican shipbuilding is constrained by slow, labor-intensive production methods and a shortage of skilled manufacturing capacity. We are developing robotic production systems that can turn engineering data directly into finished steel structures, dramatically reducing the time and manual programming required to build ships.\nOur first platform combines industrial robots, automated material handling, welding, sensing and AI-driven manufacturing software to produce large ship panels and structural assemblies. Instead of programming each new part by hand, our goal is for the system to understand the CAD model, determine how the structure should be assembled and welded, and generate the robotic plan required to build it.\nThis requires software that allows engineers and operators to understand complex 3D structures, review automatically generated manufacturing plans, control production workflows and respond when physical conditions differ from the nominal CAD model.\nThe software you build will be used to manufacture real steel structures in our Austin facility and, over time, in shipyards across the country.\nThe Internship\nValstad is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to help build interactive 3D and manufacturing applications for our robotic production platform.\nYou will work with CAD-derived geometry, robot paths, manufacturing data and factory workflows. Depending on your experience and interests, your project may involve 3D visualization, CAD-model processing, manufacturing-plan review, production interfaces or tools for analyzing robotic operations.\nThis is not an internship centered on mock projects or isolated coding exercises. You will own a defined software capability, work directly with engineers and factory users, and deliver something intended for use by the team.\nYou will be paired with a technical mentor and will participate in normal engineering planning, code review, testing and deployment processes.\nPotential Projects\nYour primary project will be selected based on your experience and Valstad’s highest-priority needs. Possible projects include:\nBuilding an interactive 3D viewer for ship panels, stiffeners, welds, fixtures and robotic operations\n\nVisualizing robot paths, tool orientations, work envelopes and manufacturing sequences\n\nDeveloping model-selection, filtering, measurement, annotation and section-view tools\n\nBuilding a CAD-import validation interface that identifies missing geometry, incorrect units or unsupported model conditions\n\nDeveloping tools for comparing model revisions and identifying affected manufacturing operations\n\nBuilding production job-status and operator interfaces\n\nCreating visualizations for coordinate frames, transformations and sensor measurements\n\nDeveloping tools for reviewing the difference between nominal CAD geometry and measured physical geometry\n\nBuilding dashboards for robot faults, manual interventions, cycle times and production outcomes\n\nImproving the performance of large 3D models through instancing, level of detail or incremental loading\n\nCreating automated tests for complex manufacturing workflows\n\nDeveloping internal tools that connect CAD entities to manufacturing and inspection records\n\nWhat You Will Do\nDesign and implement a scoped software project from initial requirements through demonstration and deployment.\n\nBuild production-quality frontend or full-stack software.\n\nWork with manufacturing, robotics and welding engineers to understand real operational requirements.\n\nObserve how software is used in Valstad’s manufacturing facility.\n\nWork with CAD-derived geometry and manufacturing data.\n\nDevelop clear user interfaces for complex technical workflows.\n\nWrite automated tests and participate in code review.\n\nDiagnose software behavior using logs, production data and user feedback.\n\nDocument your work so the system can be maintained and extended after the internship.\n\nPresent your completed project to the broader Valstad team.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nCurrently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or a related field.\n\nStrong programming fundamentals.\n\nExperience building software outside of introductory coursework.\n\nExperience with JavaScript or TypeScript.\n\nFamiliarity with a modern frontend framework such as React, Vue or Svelte.\n\nAbility to work independently on a clearly defined technical project.\n\nStrong debugging and problem-solving skills.\n\nAbility to communicate clearly and ask useful technical questions.\n\nInterest in robotics, manufacturing, CAD, graphics or industrial software.\n\nAvailability to work full-time and on-site in Austin for the duration of the internship.\n\nStrongly Preferred\nExperience with React and TypeScript.\n\nExperience with Three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, WebGL or another real-time 3D graphics framework.\n\nExperience developing CAD, CAM, BIM, simulation or engineering applications.\n\nFamiliarity with meshes, coordinate systems, transformations or computational geometry.\n\nExperience with Python, C++, Rust, Go or another backend or systems language.\n\nExperience with PostgreSQL, APIs or backend application development.\n\nExperience working with STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, glTF, DXF or similar geometry formats.\n\nExperience with Open Cascade or another geometry-processing library.\n\nExperience building applications for technical or expert users.\n\nExperience deploying a real application used by people other than yourself.\n\nParticipation in research, student robotics, Formula SAE, engineering design teams or relevant open-source projects.\n\nWhat We Look For\nWe are less interested in a specific number of completed courses than in evidence that you can build useful software.\nStrong candidates often have:\nPersonal projects with meaningful technical depth\n\nOpen-source contributions\n\nResearch or laboratory experience\n\nPrevious technical internships\n\nStudent-team experience\n\nA portfolio or GitHub profile showing completed work\n\nA strong explanation of the tradeoffs and failures encountered while building something\n\nShipbuilding experience is not required. We care about technical curiosity, product judgment and the ability to turn complex requirements into reliable software.\nWhat Success Looks Like\nBy the end of the internship, you will have delivered a working software capability that improves how Valstad’s team plans, visualizes or executes robotic manufacturing.\nYour project will have:\nA clearly defined user and purpose\n\nProduction-quality implementation\n\nAutomated tests appropriate to the project\n\nDocumentation and a clear handoff\n\nFeedback from actual engineers or factory users\n\nA final demonstration using real or representative manufacturing data\n\nThe strongest interns may be considered for future internships or full-time positions.\nCompensation and Benefits\nThe anticipated pay range for this internship is $32 to $38 per hour, depending on experience and technical depth.\nThe internship also includes:\nA dedicated technical mentor\n\nDirect exposure to industrial robots and manufacturing operations\n\nOwnership of a substantive engineering project\n\nRegular feedback and code review\n\nPotential relocation or temporary-housing assistance where appropriate\n\nConsideration for future internship or full-time opportunities\n\nValstad is an equal-opportunity employer. We evaluate candidates based on their ability, experience and potential to contribute to the company’s mission.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7971,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":true,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-18T20:50:38Z"}],"liveness":{"score":29,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.518,"p_room":0.55,"age_days":22,"expected_fill_days":20,"reasons":["conf:0","velocity","win:tail","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-09-23T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":76000,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/valstad-software-engineering-intern-3d-manufacturing-applications","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/valstad-software-engineering-intern-3d-manufacturing-applications.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-09-23T16:52:56Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers"}}
