You enjoy figuring out how the pieces fit together, narrowing down the cause, and working with teammates to leave the environment stronger than you found it.\nVeilant is looking for a Systems Engineer to help build, deploy, secure, and maintain mission focused infrastructure. You will work alongside other experienced engineers across Linux, networking, virtualization, cloud, security, and automation.\nThis role calls for technical curiosity, sound judgment, and follow through. We take the mission seriously and value having a life outside work.\nWhat You Will Do\nYour core work will be Linux administration and common network troubleshooting. You will also support infrastructure work across physical, virtualized, and cloud environments alongside the relevant engineers.\nDeploy and administer Linux systems, primarily Debian and Ubuntu, using established standards and peer review for production deployments; help support a smaller Windows footprint.\nSupport VMware environments alongside the virtualization engineers.\nSupport cloud infrastructure and services alongside the relevant engineers.\nInvestigate common connectivity issues and assist Network Engineering with switches, routers, and firewalls.\nAssist Network Engineering and Security Operations with secure connectivity changes and investigations.\nPartner with other teammates who specialize in DevOps, Network Engineering, and Security Operations to harden systems, automate repetitive work, and improve monitoring.\nCreate useful diagrams, build notes, troubleshooting guides, and system documentation.\nCommunicate progress, blockers, and risks clearly so work keeps moving.\nWhat Success Looks Like in Your First Six Months\nYou will build an understanding of the environment, own routine work on your assigned systems, and contribute to complex changes with support from experienced engineers. By the end of your first six months, you should be able to:\nDeploy hardened Linux systems into production using established security and operational standards and peer review.\nExplain how your assigned systems connect to the broader environment, including their dependencies and operational risks.\nContribute to investigations that cross systems, networking, virtualization, cloud, or security, bringing in the relevant engineers as needed.\nIdentify practical opportunities to simplify infrastructure, improve reliability, or strengthen security.\nPartner with DevOps to automate selected manual or repetitive tasks.\nContribute to monitoring and alerting improvements so engineers can detect and investigate problems more effectively.\nProduce documentation another engineer can use to support and troubleshoot your systems.\n What You Bring\nMust Haves\nActive Secret clearance required; Top Secret clearance preferred.\n5+ of relevant systems or infrastructure engineering experience, or equivalent hands-on experience.\nStrong Linux administration skills, including command line troubleshooting.\nBasic networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, IP addressing, and common connectivity troubleshooting.\nThe ability to investigate common systems issues, narrow down likely causes, and recognize when to involve another engineer.\nThe ability to manage assigned work, follow through on commitments, and keep teammates informed.\nClear written and verbal communication, including practical technical documentation.\nA collaborative approach to working with other experienced engineers.\nWe are looking for someone who asks useful questions, tests assumptions, and knows when to move quickly and when to slow down and validate a change.\nHelpful experience (not required)\nAWS, GCP, or hybrid cloud environments.\nAnsible, Jenkins, or similar automation tools.\nDocker, Kubernetes, or related container technologies.\nVMware ESXi, vSphere, vCenter, or vSAN.\nCisco, Juniper, or Fortinet equipment.\nRouting concepts such as OSPF, VRF, or MPLS.\nSecure connectivity such as IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, TLS, or MACsec.\nSecure, classified, or mission focused environments.\nExposure to any of these areas is helpful; we do not expect experience in all of them.
