The role focuses on cloud infrastructure resilience, disaster recovery, chaos engineering, backup and restore systems, and mentoring engineers while delivering solutions across the software development lifecycle.\n\nResponsibilities\nDelivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles\nAdvises immediate management on project-level issues\nGuides junior engineers\nOperates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices\nApplies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions\nAct as a hands-on contributor, while leading by example\nMentor junior engineers\nEnjoy a high degree of independence in decision-making while being accountable for results of yourself and your team\nBe part of a team dedicated to driving the scalability and reliability of Venmo’s AWS cloud infrastructure\nContribute to initiatives: internal teams rarely have dedicated project managers. You will define the design, identify stakeholders, navigate risks and changes, coordinate colleagues’ work, implement solutions, and be accountable for timely and quality project delivery\nTroubleshoot incidents, identify root causes, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures\nLead by example, making meaningful contributions to the improvement of engineering teams’ production operations\nDevelop and improve tools and automation to manage infrastructure and application configuration as code\nEnhance the quality, reliability, and stability of our infrastructure and operations\nDesign, implement, and operate chaos engineering experiments to proactively identify and remediate system weaknesses\nBuild and maintain disaster recovery automation, runbooks, and infrastructure across Venmo’s cloud environment\nPlan and execute chaos and incident game day exercises to validate system resilience and team preparedness\nDevelop and maintain backup and restore tooling and processes for critical systems and data\nDefine and track resilience metrics, SLOs, and recovery time objectives for owned systems\n\nSkills\n3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience\nBachelor's in computer science or related field of study\n5+ years' experience in software development or a related field\n3+ years' experience operating distributed applications 24x7x365, as part of a Cloud Engineering, DevOps, and/or SRE team\nExtensive hands-on experience with designing, implementing, and supporting infrastructure (AWS experience preferred) to support global-scale services\nDeep hands-on experience with IaaS and PaaS solutions from AWS (or similar cloud provider)\nHands-on programming and scripting (Python, Java, Bash, Go)\nHands-on experience with containers and container orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes\nStrong communication skills with the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience\nExperience with chaos engineering tools and frameworks (e.g., AWS Fault Injection Simulator, Gremlin, Chaos Monkey, Litmus)\nHands-on experience designing and implementing disaster recovery solutions for distributed systems\nExperience developing and maintaining backup and restore tooling and strategies\nExperience planning and executing game day exercises or incident simulations\nUnderstanding of RTO/RPO requirements and how to design systems to meet them\nVisa Sponsorship through PayPal is not available for this position now or any time in the future\nAWS experience preferred\n\nBenefits\nAdditional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.\nGenerous paid time off\nHealthcare coverage for you and your family\nResources to create financial security\nSupport for your mental health\nFor the majority of employees, PayPal's balanced hybrid work model offers 3 days in the office and 2 days at your choice of either the PayPal office or your home workspace.\n\nCompany Overview\nVenmo offers an app that allows users to share and make payments with friends for a variety of services.
