Venti has offices in Cambridge (Massachusetts, USA), Suzhou (China), and Singapore - our Asian headquarters.\nPosition Summary\nWe are seeking a highly experienced and hands-on robotics engineer to lead the evaluation, development, and deployment of robotic automation solutions for autonomous vehicle operations in ports, intermodal rail yards, and logistics hubs.\nThe initial focus of this role will be autonomous trailer coupling operations, including automated connection and disconnection of air brake (gladhand) and electrical interfaces. This capability is a key enabler for fully driverless terminal operations.\nThe successful candidate will evaluate existing technologies, robotics suppliers, and research solutions, define system requirements, lead proof-of-concept activities, and drive integration into Venti's autonomous vehicle platform. Where suitable solutions do not exist, the candidate will be expected to develop and prototype new robotic capabilities.\nThis role requires a combination of technical leadership, system engineering, hands-on development capability, and strong build-versus-buy judgment.\nRole responsibilities\nSolution Evaluation & Technology Strategy\nEvaluate robotics, automation, sensing, and manipulation solutions from vendors, startups, and research institutions.\n\nConduct technical due diligence and gap analysis.\n\nDevelop build-versus-buy recommendations.\n\nIdentify opportunities to leverage existing technologies before pursuing custom development.\n\nVendor Engagement\nEngage with robotics vendors, automation suppliers, and research partners.\n\nDefine technical requirements and interface specifications.\n\nEstablish performance benchmarks and validation criteria.\n\nSystem Architecture & Integration\nDefine overall robotic automation architecture.\n\nIntegrate robotic systems with ATTs\n\nDefine mechanical, electrical, software, and safety interfaces.\n\nSupport deployment, testing, and field validation.\n\nRobotics Development & Prototyping\nWhere commercial solutions are insufficient:\nDesign and prototype robotic manipulation solutions.\n\nDevelop perception, localization, and control algorithms.\n\nDesign end-effectors and automation mechanisms.\n\nImplement robotic motion planning and controls.\n\nAnalyze operational data and improve system robustness and reliability.\n\nRequired experience\nEducational Background: PhD in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline with a strong focus on robotics.\n\nExperience\n8+ years of robotics industry experience, preferably involving real-world deployment of robotic systems.\n\nProven track record delivering robotic solutions from concept through deployment.\n\nExperience evaluating, selecting, and integrating third-party robotics technologies.\n\nExperience with industrial robotic platforms such as ABB, Fanuc, KUKA, Yaskawa, Universal Robots, Franka, or equivalent systems.\n\nStrong experience in several of the following areas:\nRobotic manipulation and industrial robotics\n\nMotion planning and robot controls\n\nComputer vision and pose estimation\n\nSensor fusion and perception systems\n\nIndustrial automation and system integration\n\nSafety-critical robotic systems\n\nExperience with modern AI-driven robotics approaches is highly desirable, including:\nEnd-to-end robotic learning systems\n\nVision-Language-Action (VLA)/VLM models\n\nLearning-based manipulation\n\nImitation learning\n\nReinforcement learning\n\nFoundation models for robotics\n\nSoftware & Development\nHands-on experience with C++, Python, ROS / ROS2, MoveIt or equivalent robotics frameworks and Robot kinematics and controls\nThe candidate should be capable of personally developing
