Headquartered in Boston, Veolia has more than 10,000 employees working at more than 350 locations across North America.\n Position Purpose:\nThe Assistant Chief Wastewater Operator serves as a lead for the wastewater treatment plant and collection system operations and maintenance. They are qualified to perform the complex functions and work with the Chief Wastewater Operator to ensure compliance, train new operators, and keep the facility running smoothly. Additionally, the assistant will participate in an on-call rotation to ensure coverage outside of regular eight hour shifts.\nPrimary Duties/Responsibilities:\nEnsures conformance to process specifications. Troubleshoots and diagnoses operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure. Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to Chief. Interprets field/lab tests (chemical, physical and biological) to adjust process setpoints for permit compliance. Assists with lab testing and keeping on schedule. \nMonitors process supplies/tools and recommends reorder/replacement. \nPerforms routine and preventative maintenance (PM) and maintenance related items as assigned.\nFrequently leads PM activities, assists with work order scheduling, tracking and recordkeeping\nAssigns, monitors & reviews accuracy of work, no authority for personnel actions, work time is spent performing many of the same duties of those in group. \nParticipates in on-call rotation for weekend/holiday and off-hours coverage, assists with scheduling changes to rotation\nModels and teaches compliance with all SOPs, Town Ordinances, Veolia policies and procedures. Will assist with orienting/training new, less experienced operators and interns.\nMay recommend or adapt procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs. Is expected to suggest process improvements.\nFrequent contact with equipment suppliers/manufacturers to obtain operations and maintenance instructions.\nInspects Sewer Connections per Town Ordinance\nIn Chief's absence attends meetings, serves as point of contact for Town, creates work plan.\nAssists in other areas of plant as needed.\nWork Environment:\nSpends 100% of the time in operations environment. \nWill need to work outside in inclement weather conditions and drive company vehicle to perform duties.\nPossible Work Hazards: May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure, hot or cold work environment temperatures, slippery surfaces, biological hazards, loud noises and electrical equipment.\n Education/Experience/Background:\nHigh School education/GED with the ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally (operational, process, safety and quality instructions).\nAssociate's/Bachelor’s in a science or technical area strongly preferred.\nAt least one year of experience in an operations environment. Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of this specific facility’s wastewater technology preferred. \nPrior supervisory experience preferred.\nKnowledge/Skills/Abilities:\nMust have the ability to perform basic math equations.\nMust have the ability to identify, diagnose, and correct complex process and mechanical problems within policy and procedure limitations.\nMust be able to interpret trends, data, and operator feedback to notice changes in operations environment.\nMust demonstrate ability to efficiently operate equipment such as pumps (water, sludge chemical), engines, motors, generators, valves/gates, mixers, blowers, belt presses, and laboratory equipment.\nMust be able to use computer, learn related programs/applications for data entry and process control.\nMust demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.\nMust demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including gas detectors, confined space equipment, gloves, glasses, etc.)\nMust be able to respond to emergency calls as needed and work extended hours to accommodate site needs.\nRequired Certification/Licenses/Training:\nMust possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.\nWill be required to attend approved classes and/or events as part of upholding license.\nMA Wastewater Grade 5 required. Grade 6 or 7 preferred.\nCDL Class B with Tanker Endorsement preferred.\nMA Hoisting Engineer 2A/1B preferred.\nPhysical Requirements:\nAmount of time spent - Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift.\nWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. \nThe employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, climb, crouch and enter confined spaces. \nWill be required to use ladders or stairs.\nThe employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (occasionally more with team assistance/lifting equipment).\nSpecific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
