This role combines hands-on engineering with team leadership, overseeing a team of 4-8 developers while actively contributing to coding, architecture, and technical decision-making. The ideal candidate will drive engineering best practices, conduct code reviews, mentor team members, and ensure the delivery of high-quality software. Working closely with Product, QA, and DevOps teams, you will help define technical strategy, solve complex challenges, and deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions that support business growth and operational excellence.\nKey Responsibilities:\nTechnical leadership\nOwn the architecture and design of Java-based microservices and backend applications.\nDefine coding standards, design patterns, and best practices, and enforce them through code reviews.\nEvaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies; drive modernization and technical-debt reduction.\nMake sound trade-offs between performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.\nTeam leadership and mentoring\nLead, guide, and mentor a team of developers; run regular 1:1s and support career growth.\nBreak down requirements into technical tasks, estimate effort, and assign work.\nTake part in hiring: interviews, technical assessments, and onboarding of new engineers.\nBuild a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning.\nHands-on development\nWrite clean, efficient, well-tested code using Java 17+ and Spring Boot.\nDesign and build RESTful APIs and event-driven services (Kafka or similar).\nOptimize application and database performance; troubleshoot complex production issues.\nBuild and maintain CI/CD pipelines with the DevOps team.\nDelivery and collaboration\nWork with product owners and business analysts to refine requirements and define acceptance criteria.\nLead Agile ceremonies with the Scrum Master: sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.\nTrack delivery, flag risks early, and keep stakeholders informed of progress.\nEnsure releases meet quality, security, and compliance standards.\n What qualifications will you need to be successful?\nRequired Skills & Experience:\nCandidates need a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field\n8+ years of Java development, and 2+ years leading or mentoring a development team\nTechnical ExpertiseCore Java: Java 11/17+, OOP, collections, multithreading and concurrency, JVM tuning, garbage collection\nFrameworks: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA, Hibernate\nArchitecture: Microservices, REST API design, design patterns, domain-driven design basics\nMessaging: Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ\n Databases: SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle) and at least one NoSQL store (MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra)\nCloud and DevOps: AWS, Azure, or GCP; Docker; Kubernetes; Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub Actions\nTesting: JUnit 5, Mockito, integration testing; TDD mindset\nTools: Git, Maven or Gradle, Jira, Confluence\n Practices: Agile/Scrum, code reviews, secure coding (OWASP Top 10).\n\nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience in payments, fintech, banking, or other high-volume transaction systems.\nKnowledge of reactive programming (Spring WebFlux, Project Reactor).\nExperience with observability tools: New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or the ELK stack.\nInfrastructure as code with Terraform or CloudFormation.\nCloud certification (AWS Certified Developer or Solutions Architect, or equivalent).\nExposure to frontend frameworks (React or Angular) for full-stack collaboration.\nSoft Skills:\nClear written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nStrong problem-solving and analytical thinking under pressure.\nAbility to coach, give constructive feedback, and resolve conflicts within the team.\nOwnership mindset: accountable for outcomes, not just tasks.\nComfortable balancing hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities.\nOur Commitment\nVerifone is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
