These assignments require the fully competent application of engineering principles in naval architecture and ship structural engineering. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the incumbent will develop a thorough understanding of ABS policies, methods, and procedures. This role is focused on the structural design review and assessment of vessel hull structures..\nWhat You Will Do:\nWith minimal or no supervision, perform detailed engineering reviews of ship hull structural plans for compliance with applicable ABS Rules, statutory regulations, and contract commitments.\nPerform structural assessments and analyses as required, including the application and review of finite element analysis methods for vessel structures.\nEnsure the delivery of high-quality technical service and maintain strong customer relationships.\nApply broad and diversified knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices to engineering reviews and analyses.\nDevelop practical solutions to technical issues and recommend improvements to methods, procedures, or structural designs where needed.\nReview the work of other engineers and provide technical guidance and training when required.\nParticipate in the development and revision of Rules related to marine and vessel structure and advise team members on Rule application and interpretation.\nPrepare technically accurate and timely written responses to clients in accordance with established procedures.\nMaintain liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally. \nPrepare accurate billing to clients.\nWork collaboratively within the team while performing assignments independently for most of the time.\nCommunicate workload status to the appropriate team members to ensure client needs and project commitments are met.\nImplement and maintain ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems requirements within the assigned area of responsibility.\nEducation and Experience\nB.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering, or another related discipline. An M.S. degree is preferred.\nMinimum of eight (8) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design or consulting office, or classification society, or shipping/oil company.\nDemonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.\nPractical experience with the finite element method applied to vessel structures.\nSolid knowledge of classification society Rules, including ABS Rules or equivalent, and their application to vessel hull structures.\nProven experience in vessel structural design, scantling development, structural calculation, and/or classification plan review.\nGood command of English, with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nAdvanced practical industry experience and knowledge of related technical disciplines.\nDemonstrated ability to apply classification and quality concepts, practices, and procedures.\nAbility to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to complex structural engineering problems.\nAbility to work effectively with others while managing assignments autonomously.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\nAbility to obtain and maintain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems.\nIt Would Be Nice If You Had\nProfessional or chartered engineering license, such as CREA registration or an international equivalent.\nM.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.\nExperience with direct strength assessment, hull girder strength, buckling, fatigue, or structural details for marine vessels.\nExperience designing or reviewing structural plans for commercial vessels, offshore units, or specialized marine assets.\nPrior experience in a classification society environment.\nReporting Relationships:\nReports to a senior-level engineer or technical manager.
