The supervisor is responsible for training, scheduling, onsite safety compliance, and inspecting the work of Custodial Services Technician employees while maintaining labor productivity as an active member of the team.\nAs a working supervisor, the position performs waste management activities including litter control, recycling, event support, and operation of motorized collection equipment. The position also performs interior and exterior facility enhancement projects including floor maintenance, carpet care, hard surface floor care, window cleaning, pressure washing, and high-level dusting. The position monitors supplies and equipment, addresses operational concerns, assists with employee performance management, and helps ensure continuity of operations in the absence of management. This position additionally supports both Custodial Services and Exterior Operations as needed and serves as designated emergency personnel. Normal work hours are 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with flexibility required for emergencies, special events, operational needs, and project requirements.\nDesignated Emergency Personnel requires employees to report to work during emergency situations and closings\nRequired Qualifications\nFacility services experience in a commercial, institutional, educational, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, or similar environment.\nKnowledge of custodial cleaning methods, floor care procedures, and interior/exterior cleaning equipment.\nAbility to safely operate professional cleaning equipment, motorized waste collection equipment, and university vehicles.\nAbility to train, direct, and lead employees while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.\nAbility to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, understand and follow instructions, and resolve routine operational concerns.\nAbility to safely and frequently move and handle objects weighing up to 75 pounds or more; ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.\nAbility to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.\nMust possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.\nMust be available to work additional hours, alternate schedules, emergency assignments, and special event coverage as needed.\nThis position is designated Emergency Personnel and requires reporting during emergency operations and university closings.\nPreferred Qualifications\nPrevious lead, supervisory, or crew leadership experience.\nExperience working in a large commercial, university, or institutional environment.\nExperience with waste and recycling operations.\nExperience with custodial enhancement projects, including floor care, carpet extraction, pressure washing, and window cleaning.\nExperience in exterior maintenance to include snow and ice removal operations.\nPay Band\n2\nOvertime Status\nNon-Exempt: Eligible for overtime\nAppointment Type\nRegular\nSalary Information\nStarting Salary of $42,120 plus $2,080 Shift Differential\nHours per week\n40\nReview Date\nNovember 5, 2026\nAdditional Information\nMust have a valid Driver’s License\nMust have a safe driving record\nConviction Check/Drivers Check is required\nShift Time: 2:00pm - 10:30pm\nAbout Virginia Tech\nDedicated to its motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
