This role is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining scalable, high-performing back-end applications and services using Python and the Django framework. Working within a modern microservices environment, the role combines software engineering expertise with client-facing consultancy responsibilities, helping stakeholders make informed technical decisions while delivering robust, secure and reliable solutions.\nThe successful candidate will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from solution design and implementation through to deployment, optimisation, technical documentation and continuous improvement, while collaborating closely with product, engineering and client teams.\nWhat you’ll do\nDevelop high-quality, well-tested back-end services and RESTful APIs using Python and Django.\n\nWrite clean, maintainable and efficient code aligned with business requirements and technical specifications.\n\nBuild, integrate and maintain microservices and associated data access layers.\n\nEnsure reliable, consistent and high-performing integration with databases and related platforms.\n\nCollaborate with front-end developers to define, implement and maintain API contracts.\n\nWork closely with product managers and stakeholders to deliver solutions aligned with business objectives and timelines.\n\nParticipate in solution planning, architecture, development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance activities.\n\nConduct code reviews to ensure quality, consistency, maintainability and adherence to development standards.\n\nDebug, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in an efficient and structured manner.\n\nOptimise application performance through caching strategies, query optimisation and efficient data access patterns.\n\nPromote software engineering best practices, including version control, peer review and continuous integration.\n\nCreate and maintain technical documentation covering code, APIs, services and development processes.\n\nContribute to knowledge sharing by documenting technical solutions and producing developer guidance materials.\n\nEvaluate and adopt relevant technologies, tools and frameworks that support innovation and continuous improvement.\n\nProvide technical consultancy and strategic guidance to clients regarding technology selection, development approaches and solution roadmaps.\n\nBuild trusted relationships with clients through proactive communication and delivery excellence.\n\nGather feedback, communicate progress updates and support alignment between technical delivery and business expectations.\n\nSupport onboarding activities and facilitate knowledge-transfer sessions for new team members.\n\nShare technical expertise through mentoring, documentation and collaborative problem-solving.\n\nParticipate in strategic initiatives, investigations, process improvements and cross-functional projects where relevant.\n\nWho you are\nMinimum 3 years of experience in back-end development with a strong focus on Python and Django.\n\nStrong proficiency in Python development and the Django framework.\n\nExperience designing, developing and maintaining RESTful APIs.\n\nSolid understanding of relational databases and SQL.\n\nStrong understanding of microservices architecture and integration patterns.\n\nExperience working with version control systems and software build tools.\n\nFamiliarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies in collaborative delivery environments.\n\nExcellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.\n\nAbility to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.\n\nStrong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.\n\nCommitment to continuous professional and technical development.\n\nBasic understanding of containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes is advantageous.\n\nExperience with message brokers and asynchronous processing technologies is beneficial.\n\nFamiliarity with observability practices including logging, metrics and distributed tracing is desirable.\n\nExperience with testing frameworks would be an advantage.\n\nExposure to CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is beneficial.\n\nNot a perfect fit?\nConcerned you may not meet every requirement?
