The Mechatronics Engineer will be located onsite in Pueblo, CO and reports to the Production Technology Development Engineering Manager. This role is responsible for designing, integrating, commissioning, and sustaining mechatronic systems - spanning mechanical, electrical, and software domains - in support of solid rocket motor production and energetic materials manufacturing at Voyager Energetics. With 3-5 years of hands-on experience, this individual brings a strong technical foundation, a bias for action, and the drive to take on increasing ownership in a fast-paced, mission-driven manufacturing environment.

In this role, the essential functions are:

  • Design, build, and commission mechatronic systems - including robotic handling, custom end-effectors, motion control, sensor integration, and electromechanical assemblies - to support production of solid rocket motors and energetic materials.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and continuously improve existing automated systems across the production floor to maximize uptime, process reliability, and throughput.
  • Integrate hardware components - robots, actuators, sensors, and PLCs - with software control layers and data pipelines; develop and execute system validation plans including functional testing, acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), and associated documentation.
  • Author and maintain engineering documentation - including schematics, test records, validation reports, and change logs - in accordance with program and compliance requirements.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that reduce cycle time, error rates, and manual intervention across manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Safety, and Compliance teams to embed mechatronics solutions into all phases of the product lifecycle, from R&D development through full production.
  • Apply structured problem-solving and root cause analysis to resolve system failures and process deviations, supporting a strong safety and quality culture.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate design iteration, code generation, and troubleshooting workflows.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with 3 years of experience in mechatronics, automation, or a related field OR Master's degree in a relevant field with 1 year of experience OR 7 years of hands-on mechatronics and automation experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, building, and commissioning mechatronic systems - including robotics, motion control, sensors, and electromechanical integration.
  • Experience integrating hardware across multiple subsystems including PLCs, sensors, actuators, and software control layers.
  • General programming aptitude with the ability to read, modify, and write control or scripting code (Python, C#, C++, or equivalent).
  • Experience working in at least one regulated industry (aerospace, defense, chemical, or similar) with demonstrated commitment to safety culture and the ability to operate within rigorous regulatory environments including OSHA and ITAR.
  • Strong documentation habits - test records, validation reports, engineering change logs, or equivalent - with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong self-starter with the ability to solve complex problems from first principles with minimal supervision, both independently and as a contributing team member in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with energetic materials, explosives, or other hazardous manufacturing environments (C1D1/C2D1 or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with machine learning or AI-assisted applications in manufacturing contexts, such as vision-based inspection, predictive maintenance, or adaptive process control.

Travel, Physical and Government Mandated Requirements

  • Travel up to 10%, including the possibility of overnights within the continental United States.
  • Ability to lift, move, or carry items or equipment up to 50 pounds. Comfortable standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching in a manufacturing environment; use of personal protective equipment required.
  • Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain applicable state and federal explosives licenses, including minimum age requirements (21 and over), a drug-free workplace in compliance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 (41 U.S.C. §§ 8101-8106), Executive Order 12564 (Drug-Free Federal Workplace), applicable Department of Defense directives including DoD Instruction 1010.09 and DFARS 252.226-7003, and successful completion of any legally required background investigations.
  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
