Much of this work involves understanding and safely modifying long-lived\napplications, troubleshooting existing behavior, implementing enhancements, and\nextending existing systems to participate in newer application architectures.\nThe majority of the work is legacy application maintenance and enhancement. New\ndevelopment is also required, particularly around the creation of APIs that make existing\nProgress application capabilities available to other systems.\nEffective augmentation requires strong Progress development skills as well as good\nsoftware engineering judgment. A resource needs to be able to understand unfamiliar\nexisting code, determine the implications of a proposed change, communicate effectively\nwith the internal team, and make changes without unnecessarily destabilizing established\nsystems.\n\nProgress Development\nThe team’s Progress work includes:\n Development using Progress ABL / Progress 4GL\n Supporting applications running on Progress OpenEdge 11.7 and later\n Maintaining and enhancing established Progress applications\n Understanding and safely modifying unfamiliar or legacy code\n Debugging and tracing application behavior through existing codebases\n Implementing new functionality within established applications\n Working with Progress database access from an application developer’s\nperspective\n\nDeep Progress database administration knowledge is not required for this development\nprofile.\nAPI and Integration Development\nAn increasing portion of the work involves enabling established Progress systems to\nintegrate with newer applications and services.\n\nRelevant capabilities include:\n\n Creating APIs around existing Progress application capabilities\n Understanding HTTP and REST-style APIs\n Separating business logic from API or transport concerns where practical\n Designing clear interfaces between legacy applications and newer systems\n Working with formats such as JSON for application integration\nSoftware Engineering Practices\n\nProgress development is expected to reflect sound software engineering practices despite\nthe age or constraints of the systems involved.\n\nRelevant capabilities include:\n Designing maintainable software\n Understanding separation of concerns, coupling, cohesion, and dependency management\n Incrementally refactoring legacy code where doing so improves the change being made\n Balancing improvement opportunities against scope, risk, and business value\n Applying automated testing where practical\n Reasoning carefully about regression risk\n Understanding existing behavior before modifying it\n Avoiding unnecessary rewrites when incremental change is more appropriate\nRequirements, Judgment, and Communication\n\nThe nature of the work requires developers who can:\n Listen carefully and communicate clearly\n Clarify requirements and assumptions\n Understand the purpose and expected outcome of a change\n Work independently while maintaining regular communication with the internal team\n Seek alignment when requirements or technical direction are unclear\n Identify unexpected dependencies and regression risks\n Raise concerns or alternative approaches early\n Accept technical direction and incorporate feedback constructively\n Recognize when additional technical guidance is needed\nAdditional Relevant Capabilities\n\nDepending on the work, useful experience can include:\n\n Integrating Progress applications with .NET or other modern application environments\n REST API design and consumption\n JSON serialization and API payload design\n Relational database concepts\n Query performance and indexing from an application-development perspective\n Git source control\n Modernization of legacy application interfaces\n Automated testing of legacy or difficult-to-test applications\n Working in environments where established Progress systems coexist with newer technologies\nResponsibilities Outside This Profile\n\nThis development profile does not depend on a resource serving as:\n\n A Progress DBA\n An AIX or operating-system administrator\n A business analyst\n A help desk or second-tier application support resource\n A CI/CD or deployment infrastructure administrator\nThose capabilities may be useful in particular circumstances, but they should not be\ntreated as primary screening criteria when identifying resources to augment Progress\ndevelopment work.\n\nMost Important Characteristics\n\nWhen considering a resource for this work, the strongest indicators of fit are:\n\n1.
