Wabtec is an American rail equipment company whose oldest predecessor was the Westinghouse Air Brake Company founded in 1869 to make the railway air brake, and which took its modern form through the 2019 merger with GE Transportation. It builds and services freight locomotives, supplies braking, control and signalling systems for freight and transit operators, sells digital fleet and network optimisation software, and runs a large aftermarket parts and overhaul business. Headquartered in Pittsburgh and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it earns a substantial share of revenue from services on an installed base that lasts for decades.

Who will you be working with?

Bloom Engineering, a Wabtec Company improves the environmental sustainability of industrial heating applications, with a particular focus on the aluminum and steel industries. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since 1934, Bloom serves customers globally through operations in the United States, Germany, India, and China.

As a Drafting Intern, you will work closely with Bloom’s Design Engineering team and other professionals to support the development and documentation of custom industrial combustion equipment. You will gain hands-on experience applying drafting and CAD principles in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment.

How will you make a difference?

In this role, you will help translate engineering concepts and designs into accurate drawings and documentation used to manufacture and assemble Bloom equipment. You will gain practical experience with real-world engineering projects while learning how drawings move from design through manufacturing and ultimately into equipment operating at customer facilities.

This internship is a temporary role that provides exposure to mechanical design, manufacturing processes, engineering standards, and the collaboration required to deliver custom-engineered products.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting and Design Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Coursework or experience using 2D and/or 3D CAD software.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and drafting principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical information and engineering documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
  • Comfortable working in both an office and manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced engineers and drafters, and incorporate feedback.
  • Ability to organize work and manage multiple assignments and priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Inventor is preferred.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Create and revise mechanical drawings under the direction of engineers and experienced drafters.
  • Develop and update 2D drawings and 3D models for components, assemblies, and custom-engineered equipment.
  • Incorporate engineering changes and redlines into existing drawings.
  • Assist with preparing drawings and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Apply Bloom drafting standards, drawing practices, and document-control requirements.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, dimensions, and consistency before release.
  • Assist with maintaining drawing files, bills of materials, and related engineering documentation.
  • Work with engineers, drafters, manufacturing employees, and other team members to resolve drawing or design questions.
  • Visit the manufacturing floor to see how drawings are translated into fabricated and assembled equipment and develop a practical understanding of manufacturability.
  • Participate in design reviews and engineering discussions as appropriate.
  • Support ongoing engineering projects and other drafting assignments based on business needs.

The hourly rate for this role is currently $20.00. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
