At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.\nAbout Our Team\nThe Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning News and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.\nWhy This Role Matters\nWe are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Subscriptions team at The Washington Post. This role spans the full application stack with a strong emphasis on frontend applications and customer-facing experiences. You will design and build modern web applications primarily using React and TypeScript, while also contributing to backend services built with Java and Node.js and the AWS infrastructure and deployment systems that support them.\nAs a senior engineer, you will take ownership of complex technical work from design through production, contribute to architectural decisions, and help improve the quality, performance, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability of the applications our subscription products depend on.\nThe ideal candidate brings strong frontend engineering experience, particularly with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript, along with practical experience working with backend services and APIs. You should be able to contribute to Java and Node.js applications and be comfortable with AWS, CI/CD, observability, and production operations. This is a frontend-focused role, but you should be capable of delivering effectively across the full stack.\nWe value autonomy, initiative, strong technical judgment, clear communication, and meaningful day-to-day use of AI-assisted engineering tools, including continually finding new ways to apply AI to software development, automation, operations, and team effectiveness.\nWhat Motivates You\nStrong sense of ownership and accountability for the software you build and the customer experiences it supports.\nPassionate about designing accessible, performant, reliable, and maintainable frontend applications.\nEnjoys solving complex frontend and full-stack problems and driving work from design through production.\nComfortable working across React applications, backend services and APIs, AWS infrastructure, and production operations.\nProactive and comfortable driving complex work with a high degree of autonomy.\nInterested in understanding how applications operate in production rather than treating deployment and infrastructure as separate concerns.\nActively uses AI in day-to-day engineering and continually looks for ways to expand its impact on development, testing, automation, troubleshooting, and productivity.\nEnjoys collaborating across engineering, product, and design while mentoring other engineers and communicating technical decisions clearly.\nHow You'll Support the Mission\nDesign, build, test, deploy, and operate customer-facing applications and services supporting our subscription products.\nDevelop modern frontend applications primarily using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.\nBuild and improve subscription experiences such as checkout, offers, paywalls, product pages, subscriber lifecycle flows, and mobile web and native app integrations.\nOwn technical solutions throughout their lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvement.\nMake thoughtful frontend architectural decisions around component design, application structure, state management, API integration, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.\nBuild reusable components, shared libraries, and frontend patterns that improve consistency and development efficiency.\nContribute to backend services, APIs, integrations, automation, and tooling built with Java and Node.js.\nCollaborate with backend engineers to define reliable API contracts and integration patterns that support customer-facing experiences.\nWork with AWS services and infrastructure supporting our applications and contribute to CI/CD, deployment automation, and Infrastructure as Code.\nEstablish strong observability and diagnose issues spanning frontend applications, backend services, integrations, infrastructure, and deployment systems.\nParticipate in the team’s on-call rotation, taking ownership of incident diagnosis, mitigation, communication, and follow-up.\nIdentify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, architectural limitations, and opportunities for improvement and proactively drive solutions.\nMentor engineers and contribute to technical standards, architecture discussions, documentation, code quality, and engineering best practices.\nUse AI throughout the engineering lifecycle to improve development, testing, troubleshooting, automation, documentation, and operational workflows.\nThe Skills and Experience You Bring\nBroad expertise building responsive, high-performance web applications using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.\nSolid background developing backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Node.js.\nExperience working within AWS ecosystems, including containerized workloads (Docker/ECS) and foundational Infrastructure as Code concepts.\nStrong knowledge of core web technologies, responsive layouts, web accessibility standards, and browser performance optimization.\nHands-on experience establishing CI/CD automation and deployment pipeline configurations.\nFamiliarity with production monitoring and observability tools, including logging, metrics, alerting, and incident response.\nBackground building conversion-critical customer experiences, such as checkout flows, subscription systems, paywalls, or payment integrations.\nExperience integrating web applications and micro-frontends with native mobile app environments.\nPractical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to support day-to-day software development, testing, and troubleshooting.\nMinimum Qualifications\nBA/BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.\n5+ years of frontend development with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.\n3+ years of backend development with Java, Node.js, or both.\n2+ years of experience deploying and operating applications in AWS.\nStrong knowledge of HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, browser behavior, and frontend performance.\nExperience with frontend architecture, reusable components, state management, API integration, and automated testing.\nExperience building and integrating with RESTful APIs and distributed backend services.\nExperience with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, IAM, and CloudWatch.\nExperience with CI/CD and deployment automation using Jenkins or comparable tooling.\nExperience with Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation, or comparable technologies.\nExperience building and operating containerized applications using Docker and ECS.\nExperience with production observability, including logs, metrics, dashboards, alerting, and troubleshooting.\nExperience supporting production applications through on-call rotations and incident response.\nAbility to independently scope and drive complex technical work from design through production.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\nSignificant hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools in day-to-day development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, or automation.\nPreferred Qualifications\n7+ years of frontend development with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.\n4+ years of backend development with Java, Node.js, or both.\n3+ years of experience designing, deploying, and operating applications in AWS.\nExperience with frontend monorepos, shared component libraries, design systems, or reusable application frameworks.\nExperience building high-volume or conversion-sensitive experiences such as checkout, payments, subscriptions, ecommerce, registration, or account management.\nExperience integrating web applications with native mobile applications.\nStrong experience with Jenkins, AWS CDK, Terraform, containerized deployments, and automated delivery pipelines.\nExperience with observability platforms such as Datadog, Catchpoint, and AWS-native monitoring services.\nExperience improving frontend performance, accessibility, application reliability, and developer productivity.\nExperience mentoring engineers and influencing frontend architecture and engineering practices across team boundaries.\nAdvanced use of AI-assisted engineering tools, including helping other engineers apply AI effectively across development, testing, automation, troubleshooting, and operations.\n\nCollaboration makes us stronger.
