Wayve is a British autonomous driving company founded in Cambridge in 2017 that trains end-to-end neural networks to drive rather than assembling hand-written rules around high-definition maps. Its AI Driver learns from camera video and can be deployed on standard vehicle sensor sets, which is what lets the company demonstrate driving in cities it has never mapped. Headquartered in London and backed by a one billion dollar SoftBank-led round plus investment from NVIDIA, Microsoft and Uber, it partners with carmakers to ship assisted driving software and is developing fully driverless deployments.

Before the detail, here's the challenge you'd help us solve.

We build the embodied intelligence that moves real vehicles safely, and the ecosystem a billion machines will run on in the future. Very few people in AI can say this. Every role here, whatever the team, plugs into that.

Here’s what this particular role covers.

About our Field Engineering Team

Our Field Engineering team is the operational backbone for Wayve, delivering hands-on technical support to keep our global fleet running smoothly. The team diagnoses and solves complex technical issues, supports mission-critical fleet operations, and serves as a vital communication link between in-country operations, engineering, and product teams. We are responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and operational excellence of our vehicles, collaborating closely with both internal and external stakeholders.

The Role

The Field Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for diagnosing and resolving vehicle software and hardware issues to keep the fleet operational. You will play a critical role in rapid fault triage, ensuring a 5-minute response time while strictly adhering to safety protocols. Working closely with fellow engineers and global teams, you’ll contribute to seamless operations through effective communication and problem-solving. As part of a newly established function within Fleet Operations, you’ll help refine processes and drive efficiency in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site fault triage and resolution, diagnosing and repairing vehicle software and hardware issues quickly to maintain fleet uptime.

  • Follow structured fault diagnosis and repair protocols, ensuring all work is carried out efficiently and in alignment with operational workflows.

  • Collaborate with fellow field engineers and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively.

  • Respond rapidly to issues, meeting the 5-minute issue response to keep vehicles operational and our teams feeling adequately supported.

  • Maintain clear communication with the Field Engineering Lead, providing updates on ongoing repairs and ensuring smooth handovers across geographical locations.

  • Participate in on-call rotations, assisting with technical support and issue resolution across multiple regions as part of a 24/7 global support network.

  • Adhere to strict safety and compliance protocols, ensuring all fault triage, diagnosis, and repairs follow the correct procedures and approvals.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, identifying operational challenges and providing feedback to optimize field engineering support and efficiency.

About You

Essential:

  • Technical Expertise - Strong understanding of vehicle diagnostics, software and hardware fault triage, and repair processes. Experience in fleet operations, automotive systems, or ADAS technology is a plus.

  • Problem-Solving & Efficiency - Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues quickly, meeting strict SLAs (5-minute response time) to keep vehicles operational.

  • Communication & Collaboration - Capable of working closely with global teams, providing clear technical updates, and ensuring smooth handovers across locations.

  • Safety & Compliance - Deep understanding of safety protocols, incident management, and adherence to operational procedures to ensure secure and effective repairs.

  • Adaptability & Flexibility - Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment, including participation in on-call rotations and weekend coverage as needed.

  • Technical Tools & Platforms - Familiarity with diagnostic tools, software monitoring platforms (e.g., Datadog, Mender), and ticketing systems like JIRA.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of ADAS technology and on-road testing requirements is highly advantageous.

    Additional Details:

    • This is a full-time, shift-based role based in our office in Sunnyvale.

    • 10-15% travel required

    • This role will be shift-based.

We understand that everyone has a unique set of skills and experiences and that not everyone will meet all of the requirements listed above. If you’re passionate about self-driving cars and think you have what it takes to make a positive impact on the world, we encourage you to apply.

More about Wayve:

Wayve is building the leading AI platform for autonomous driving. We are pioneering an end to end AI approach that enables vehicles to learn directly from real world experience, developing the ability to adapt, generalise and improve at scale. Instead of relying on hand coded rules or pre mapped environments, our AI Driver learns to drive by understanding the world around it. The result is technology that navigates complex urban environments with intelligence, precision and natural flow, unlocking meaningful advances in both safety and efficiency. We believe autonomy represents a once in a generation transformation in how people and goods move, comparable to the shift from horses to cars, and from human driven vehicles to intelligent machines.

Our ambition is to make autonomy universal. Wayve’s mapless and hardware agnostic AI platform integrates with global OEM partners, enabling continuous software evolution and unlocking advanced levels of automation from L2 plus through to L4 as our core AI model scales. In a race increasingly defined by intelligence and real world learning, Wayve is taking a distinct approach, building a generalisable driving intelligence that can power any vehicle, anywhere. By combining embodied AI with scalable deployment, we are creating technology that can be shaped to each OEM brand and driver experience, accelerating the transition to a safer, more intelligent future of mobility.

How we work - Locations & Flexible Working:

Our main hubs are in London, Sunnyvale, Yokohama, Herzliya, Vancouver and Leonberg. We operate a hybrid working model that combines in-person collaboration in our dedicated office spaces with focused time working remotely. The Interview Process:

Our process is clear and respectful of your time:

  • Initial Call / Recruiter Screen (30 mins)

  • Competency Interviews: Competencies, motivation, communication, practical problem solving; 1 hour total

  • Deep-dive Technical Interview: Technical depth for diagnosis/triage, structured debugging, safety mindset; 1 hour total

  • Final Interview: Mission & values alignment; 1 hour

We’ll always explain the format and work around your availability.

What’s in it for you (Location dependent):

The reasonably estimated salary for this role ranges from $90,000 to $103,000, plus a competitive equity package. Actual compensation is based on the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience.

Comprehensive benefits including health insurance, dental, enhanced maternity and paternity leave, retirement or pension where applicable, access to therapists, wellbeing partnerships, team socials and more

A quick, honest note before you apply.

Wayve is not a mature, fully-structured place with the playbook already written. Much of how we work is still being written, and if you join, you’ll help write it. That suits people who want real ownership more than people who need a settled structure from day one.

If that sounds like the kind of problem you want to spend your time on, we’d really like to hear from you.

At Wayve we're committed to creating a diverse, fair and respectful culture that is inclusive of everyone based on their unique skills and perspectives, and regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law.
