We're a team of 60+ passionate people shaping the future of autoimmune care.\nAbout the Role\nWellTheory is looking for a People Ops Generalist to own the foundational, always-on people operations that keep our company running. You'll own payroll, multi-state compliance, benefits administration, leaves and accommodations, and our HR policies. You'll serve as the first point of contact for our employees on anything People-related. This is a cross-functional role that collaborates closely with Finance, Recruiting, IT, Ops, and managers across the company, and reports to our Head of People.\nWe've nearly doubled in size this year, now employ people in 20+ states, and are continuing to grow - so you'll help build the systems, processes, and self-serve resources that scale with us.\nWhat You'll Do\nRun multi-state payroll. Run bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time in Gusto and Deel for our employees and contractors, and keep our HRIS systems up to date with changes to compensation, time off, benefits, onboarding, and offboarding.\n\nOwn compliance across dozens of states. Set up new states for payroll taxes, workers' comp, and unemployment insurance as we hire in new places; reconcile failed filings; manage our inbound HR virtual mailbox; and read and respond to letters from vendors and government agencies.\n\nBe the go-to partner for employees. Serve as a trusted, confidential first point of contact for employee questions and employee relations issues, applying sound judgment and escalating to the Head of People when needed.\n\nSupport employees through benefits, leaves, and accommodations. Help employees navigate benefits questions, support open enrollment, and manage the intake and processing of leaves, accommodations, and other time off requests with care and confidentiality.\n\nKeep our policies current. Review and continually update our collection of HR policies and practices so they keep pace with our growth and with changing federal and state employment law.\n\nOwn onboarding and offboarding. Oversee and continuously improve our onboarding and offboarding processes so every employee has a smooth, consistent experience from their first day through their last.\n\nAutomate the repeatable with AI. Continually build new ways to automate repeatable People Ops tasks with AI, while applying a high degree of judgment, attention to detail, and HR expertise to critical people decisions.\n\nYou Might Be a Great Fit If You...\nHave 4-7+ years of experience in People Operations or HR, ideally at a fast-growing startup, including hands-on ownership of payroll\n\nHave run multi-state payroll and compliance - you've registered a company in a new state, responded to agency notices, and untangled a failed tax filing\n\nHave a strong working knowledge of federal and state employment law, including leaves of absence (FMLA and state leave programs), ADA accommodations, and wage and hour rules\n\nHave exceptional attention to detail and take pride in getting things right the first time - especially when it comes to people's pay\n\nAre discreet, empathetic, and steady - employees trust you with sensitive situations, and you balance care for the individual with what's right for the company\n\nGet energy from building systems: you spot repeatable work and find ways to streamline or automate it, and you're excited to use AI tools like Claude to do it\n\nThrive in a fully remote, fast-paced environment and can juggle many time-sensitive priorities without letting anything slip\n\nBonus Points\nYou've been called a \"force of nature\" and have done something most people wouldn't - run a marathon, started a company, earned a degree while working full-time, or overcome significant adversity\n\nYou have direct experience in digital health or the autoimmune/chronic condition space\n\nYou're familiar with our primary tool stack (Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, Claude) and People tools (Gusto, Deel)\n\nWhat We Offer\nA team that genuinely cares about each other and the members we serve\n\nA fully remote company that gathers every year for an annual retreat\n\nA base salary of $115,000 with meaningful equity and benefits.
