As a Forestry Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience working alongside industry experts, contributing to meaningful projects, and learning how sustainable forestry supports both the environment and the communities we serve.\nPosition Overview\nThe Forestry Intern will support the Westervelt Forest Resources Group in a hands-on, field-based role designed to provide practical experience in forest management. This is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field to gain exposure to real-world operations and decision-making.\nKey Responsibilities\n·Assist foresters with harvest planning, contract administration, and field inspections.\n·Participate in road layout, maintenance planning, and infrastructure assessments.\n·Support silvicultural activities including site preparation, planting, herbicide applications, and stand evaluations.\n·Gain exposure to nursery and seed orchard operations that support long-term forest sustainability.\n·Assist with timber inventory, data collection, and GIS mapping projects.\n·Monitor and implement Forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) to support responsible land stewardship.\n·Work safely in a variety of field conditions across active timberland operations.\nWhat You’ll Learn\n·Sustainable forest management practices\n·Timber harvesting and market operations\n·Reforestation and silvicultural systems\n·Road design and maintenance planning\n·Best Management Practices (BMPs) implementation\n·Forestry technology, mapping, and data analysis\n·Landowner and contractor relationship management\n·Career opportunities within the forest products industry\nSuccessful interns will have the opportunity to build relationships with forestry leaders across the organization and may be considered for future full-time opportunities within Westervelt upon graduation.\nRequirements\nCurrently pursuing a degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field\nWillingness to relocate to one of the internship sites for the summer\nStrong work ethic, adaptability, and interest in fieldwork\nValid driver’s license and good driving record\nCompensation & Benefits\nHousing provided or housing allowance available\nCompetitive internship stipend\nMentorship from experienced forestry professionals\nNetworking opportunities within the forestry industry\nEqual Opportunity Employer -
