As an individual contributor, you will turn strategic goals for the platform into practical plans, make independent technical decisions, and lead projects through delivery while remaining hands-on. You will work across engineering, product, and external partners to reduce dependencies on global systems, strengthen integrations, and improve reliability and scalability. You will share your expertise, mentor colleagues, and use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to improve delivery and quality. This role has no direct reports.\nResponsibilities\nSet technical direction for assigned platform initiatives and translate strategic goals into plans that improve outcomes across the engineering function.\nOwn the architecture, implementation, and operation of platform APIs and services that support new systems, internal products, and third-party integrations while reducing dependencies on global systems.\nUse AI-assisted coding and automation where they improve productivity, while reviewing generated work for correctness, security, maintainability, and fit for purpose.\nMake independent technical decisions and explain trade-offs among delivery speed, reliability, security, maintainability, and cost.\nCollaborate with internal teams and external engineering partners on technical designs, interfaces, and delivery standards.\nLead complex projects from design through launch: define milestones, manage technical dependencies and risks, and resolve delivery blockers.\nImprove engineering practices across frontend and backend systems, including testing, code reviews, observability, documentation, and deployment.\nMentor engineers through design reviews, pairing, and technical guidance; share deep subject matter knowledge without direct people management.\nCommunicate context, decisions, and progress to the right stakeholders, maintaining alignment across engineering, product, and operations.\nBuild and maintain critical backend and web application code, including user-facing workflows and integrations, and take ownership of production outcomes.\nQualifications\nMust-Have:\nTrack record of leading complex technical initiatives as an individual contributor and working across teams to deliver measurable outcomes.\nPractical experience with AI-assisted development tools and the judgment to validate their output.\n8+ years of professional software engineering experience building production web and platform systems.\nStrong experience designing distributed services, RESTful APIs, and integrations with external systems.\nStrong backend development skills with PHP/Laravel, Node.js, or comparable frameworks and services.\nHands-on experience building web interfaces with JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern frontend framework.\nSolid understanding of authentication, authorization, API security, and secure web application design.\nExperience operating cloud-based production systems, including monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements.\nAbility to plan and manage technical projects, make sound decisions independently, and mentor peers without direct reports.\nExcellent English communication skills and the ability to align technical and nontechnical stakeholders across functions.\nPreferred:\nExperience designing or operating API gateways or shared platform services.\nFamiliarity with AWS services (API Gateway, Lambda, EC2, S3, CloudFront, etc.).\nExperience supporting mobile applications and frontend teams through shared APIs or platform services.\nCI/CD and infrastructure-as-code exposure.\nJapanese language proficiency.\nProfile:\nYou bring deep expertise across application and platform engineering, take ownership of difficult problems, and turn broad goals into working systems.
