Research Exchange (ReX) is Wiley's publishing platform, built from components such as Review, Screening, and Commissions. As a Solution Architect, you will provide a holistic view of, and take ownership of, its infrastructure and supporting technologies, ensuring solutions meet business requirements and strategic direction for the long term in a secure, scalable, and cost-effective way. You'll partner closely with senior leaders, engineering and delivery teams, product managers, and development teams across these components to keep roadmaps aligned and guide well-considered technology decisions, all while remaining pragmatic.\nResponsibilities\nProvide a holistic view of, and ownership over, the platform's core and supporting technologies, building consensus on its future technical direction.\nMake high-level technical decisions that influence all development teams, defining and communicating architectural solutions through code, where appropriate.\nUnderstand the business context and vision for ReX, partnering with product teams to propose solutions that align with our direction.\nGuide a cohesive technical direction across ReX's core components, helping each development team make well-aligned architectural choices as the platform evolves.\nLead scoping, architecture, and design across cloud and on-premises technologies, and drive multi-year architecture roadmaps.\nDevelop solutions using a cloud-first approach on AWS; establish strategies for secure identity, authentication, and authorization architectures; and lead security projects from conception through implementation.\nEvaluate integration requirements for business solutions, ensuring adherence to architecture standards and information security policies.\nEducate, support, and mentor development teams through training and hands-on collaboration, focusing on building the teams' own capabilities rather than creating dependency on you.\nContinuously improve technical processes and practices, and implement quality assurance guidelines for testing, code quality, and deployment.\nStay ahead of industry trends, contribute to technology strategy and roadmaps, and maintain documentation of architectural decisions and standards.\nBe part of the wider Research Architecture Group, contributing to pan-Wiley architecture policies, and conduct periodic skills gap analyses and training.\nRequirements:\nEducation & Experience\nDegree in Computer Science or a related field (MSc preferred), or equivalent demonstrated experience; a minimum of 12 years in the software industry, including several years in an architecture or technical leadership capacity.\nProven track record in software and systems architecture and event-driven microservices, with deep expertise in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem and cloud-native technologies on AWS.\nTechnical Expertise\nDeep expertise across our stack (Node.js, TypeScript, Express, React, and GraphQL), with a proven track record of architecting event-driven, service-based systems.\nHands-on experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) running on AWS, as well as CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code practices.\nStrong understanding of cloud delivery models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and observability and monitoring practices for distributed, service-based architectures.\nNice to Have\nExperience with Agile and Lean methodologies; a strong grasp of clean code principles, continuous delivery, and managing technical debt.\nFamiliarity with GraphQL schema design and message/event-based integration patterns; AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Solutions Architect) is a plus.\nSkills & Behaviors\nStrong strategic planning, decision-making, and organizational skills; self-motivated, accountable, and able to influence and drive change across teams.\nAn analytical, flexible, and proactive problem-solver, comfortable managing both short-term deliverables and long-term goals.\nExcellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership; works well independently and collaboratively at all levels.\nAn advanced level of English is required.\nWe power infinite possibilities.\nFor more than 200 years, we've transformed knowledge into discoveries that shape the world.
