Full speed.\nWhether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.\nAs part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.\nFor everyone, everywhere.\nMore about our mission and what we offer.\n We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Rules Platform team (Risk & Control Tooling) in Tallinn.\nThe team builds and maintains the shared infrastructure that enables teams across Wise - including Fraud, AML and KYC - to create, execute and manage risk assessments and controls.\nOur goal is to make risk assessments fast, reliable, scalable and easy to integrate, while ensuring that the systems protecting our customers remain consistent and maintainable as Wise grows.\nYou'll work on complex backend challenges involving distributed systems, shared Engineering components (internal libraries), data consistency and platform reliability, with the opportunity to influence technical decisions and help shape the future of the platform.\nWhat you'll be working on\nBuilding and evolving our Rules Platform, developing reliable, scalable backend services and reusable internal libraries used by multiple Engineering teams.\nDriving technical design and architecture decisions for complex distributed systems where performance, reliability and data consistency are critical.\n Improving platform performance and reliability, monitoring service-level objectives (SLOs), identifying bottlenecks and driving improvements.\nCollaborating across teams, working closely with Product Managers and Engineers to understand their needs, prioritise improvements and make the platform easier to use and extend.\nTaking ownership of meaningful Engineering initiatives, from identifying problems and evaluating trade-offs through to implementation and delivery.\nSupporting Engineering excellence, contributing to technical discussions, code reviews and mentoring other engineers.\n What you'll bring\nStrong hands-on experience with JVM-based languages, such as Java or Kotlin, and building complex backend systems.\nExperience with Kafka, SQL databases and distributed systems, particularly where reliability and data consistency matter.\nExperience building or maintaining internal libraries, shared components or reusable Engineering solutions consumed by multiple teams.\nConfidence in system design and technical decision-making, including evaluating trade-offs and proposing architectural improvements.\nA strong product mindset, with the ability to understand the needs of internal users and work closely with Product Managers.\nExperience mentoring other Engineers and contributing to Engineering best practices.\nStrong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams and explain technical decisions clearly.\nNice to have\nExperience with Spring / Spring Boot and build tooling.\nExperience in FinTech, FinCrime or risk-related systems.\nFamiliarity with regulated environments where auditability, traceability and governance are important.\nYou don't need to tick every box.
