The IMF estimates that up to 5% of world GDP is laundered each year.\nWe’re looking for an Engineer to join the AML Squad and help build systems and controls that detect money laundering and terrorist financing risks across Wise’s products and regions - while reducing false alerts and avoiding unnecessary friction for legitimate customers.\nAbout the Role\nThe AML Risk team, within the AML Squad at Wise, builds detection systems and controls that help identify potential money laundering and terrorist financing activity.\nWe use data and our understanding of criminal behaviour to create effective detection controls and useful alerts. Criminal activity evolves quickly, so we continuously improve our controls as new risks appear - aiming to detect more real risk, reduce false positives, and keep the customer experience smooth.\nIn this role, you will contribute to risk detection and alert creation by owning components and medium-sized projects, working closely with a cross-functional group of engineers, product managers, data scientists, analysts, and AML subject matter experts.\nTechnical Responsibilities\nBuild and improve AML detection controls and the systems that support them.\nOwn your work end-to-end: design, implementation, deployment, and ongoing support.\nWrite well-tested, maintainable code that is safe to operate in production.\nUse data to understand problems, validate solutions, and measure outcomes.\nParticipate in code reviews, improve documentation, and contribute to team engineering standards.\nDesign and build with scalability, observability, privacy, security, reliability, and cost in mind.\nCollaboration & Ownership Responsibilities\nWork closely with product managers, data scientists, analysts, and AML subject matter experts to translate risk understanding into effective controls.\nCommunicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to your team.\nKnow when to work independently and when to ask for help, unblocking yourself and others.\nGive and receive constructive feedback, contributing to a strong and supportive engineering culture.\nThe technology you’ll work with\nPrimary stack: Java, Spring Boot, Kafka\nDistributed services and asynchronous processing\nData-intensive systems operating at scale\nEngineering focus areas: scalability, observability, privacy, security, reliability, and cost\n What we’re looking for\nTechnical skills\n2-5 years of experience building backend systems, distributed systems, or data-intensive systems.\nAble to deliver medium-sized projects independently, with good judgment around scope and quality.\nComfortable working with production systems, including testing, monitoring, and operational ownership.\nStrong fundamentals in writing maintainable code and collaborating through code review.\nProduct mindset\nUnderstands how engineering work impacts customers and the business.\nUses data to inform decisions and evaluate whether changes are working.\nCollaboration\nKnows when to drive independently vs. collaborate to get to a better outcome.\nCommunicates clearly and constructively; open to feedback.\nNice to have\nExperience with AML / financial crime (preferred but not required).\nExperience running machine learning and/or large language models in production (preferred but not required).\n Why join us / Impact\nYour work will directly improve how Wise detects financial crime.
