Duties and Responsibilities

1. Proofread and finalize documentation, correspondence, reports, publications and other materials prepared in Chinese, following established templates, guidelines and procedures;

2. Support the production of documentation and publications by preparing the layout of final products using desktop publishing software for print and/or electronic dissemination;

3. Improve Chinese results in WMO’s computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool by pre-aligning English and Chinese publications (and other language pairs, as required), validating aligned segments and correcting them, as necessary;

4. Identify new terminology material and submit it for the consideration by the Chinese linguist;

5. Translate, as required, occasional session documents, correspondence or other materials from English into Chinese;

6. Support the cleaning and preparation of Chinese bitexts and terminology lists for retraining LSP’s customized machine-translation engine;

7. Perform other related tasks as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Higher education degree (Bachelor or higher) in publishing, graphic design, language studies or another field relevant to multilingual publishing and document production.

Experience:

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.

Other Requirements:

Sense of responsibility and initiative; ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; attention to detail; good written and oral communication skills. Some knowledge of the activities of WMO or other United Nations organizations would be an asset.

Languages:

Chinese as mother tongue. Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization (Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish) would be an advantage.

Additional Information:

The intern will gain practical experience in linguistic support and multilingual

documentation production in an international organization. In particular, the

intern will:

  • Gain experience in multilingual publishing and desktop publishing processes;
  • Learn to use WMO’s CAT tools, terminology resources and reference materials;
  • Gain practical exposure to translation, alignment, terminology and machine-translation workflows;
  • Develop an understanding of the translation, editing and publication process within WMO; and
  • Gain experience working collaboratively with linguists, publishing assistants, authors and administrative staff in a multilingual environment.
