As a HV Cable Design Engineer working within WSP's Ireland Energy business, you will be responsible for working as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering the power transmission infrastructure that will deliver Net Zero to the Energy System. Your unique perspectives will help us drive innovation and foster an inclusive environment.\n\nA little more about your role…\nLead the development and assurance of HV/MV cable system designs from concept through FEED and detailed design, including specifications, technical evaluation, and construction support.\n\nAct as a technical authority, providing guidance across cable system engineering and supporting multidisciplinary integration with civil, primary, and protection & control teams.\n\nUndertake Owner’s Engineer / Client-side design reviews of developer, supplier, and contractor deliverables, ensuring compliance with technical standards, contractual requirements, and applicable legislation.\n\nPrepare and review key technical documentation including equipment and cable route specifications, tender documentation, and technical/progress reports.\n\nPerform and validate engineering calculations such as cable sizing and rating, thermal performance, EMF/TMF assessments, and sheath bonding/induced voltage studies.\n\nEnsure designs are coordinated across all interfaces and delivered in accordance with programme, quality expectations, and client specifications.\n\nIdentify, assess, and communicate health and safety risks within designs, ensuring hazards are eliminated or mitigated in line with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 and good engineering practice.\n\nLead and participate in technical meetings, design reviews, and workshops with clients, stakeholders, and supply chain partners to drive alignment and resolve issues.\n\nSupport project delivery through attendance at key stages including design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FATs), and site inspections, providing technical oversight during construction and commissioning.\n\nContribute to temporary works considerations and construction methodologies to ensure safe and practical installation solutions.\n\nEnsure all drawings, specifications, and design deliverables are accurate, complete, and issued in a timely manner, proactively managing information gaps to avoid programme delays.\n\nMaintain strong working relationships with clients, designers, and contractors, supporting effective collaboration and successful project outcomes.\n\nWhat we will be looking for you to demonstrate…\nA Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably Electrical or Power engineering.\n\nExtensive experience in the design, manufacture and test of HV cables for use in HVAC and desirable - HVDC projects both onshore and offshore; including HV cable system design and ratings (CYMCAP)\n\nAn understanding of IEC cable standards and CIGRE technical policies, its suite of technical specifications and supporting documentation, and the capability to fulfil a role as a cable expert.\n\nKnowledge of EirGrid and ESB Networks engineering standards and technical policies and specifications for HV and MV Cables\n\nExperience of witnessing 3rd party cable activities such as test, installation, transport etc.\n\nExperience of Working Groups and Technical committees such as CIGRE and IEEE.\n\nAttained or working towards Chartered Engineer status.\n\nThe ability to travel as projects dictate.\n\nExcellent understanding of the H&S requirements and an ability to undertake the role of ‘Designer’ under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013.\n\nDiversity and Inclusion: We are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and therefore you will be part of a team that will include colleagues from across the world.
