We run on the EveryMatrix platform for wallet, payments, casino, sportsbook and bonuses, and build our own services on Google Cloud (GKE and Cloud Run) to own the player experience across iOS, Android, mobile web and desktop.\nWe are a small senior team. Every engineer ships, owns what they ship, and works in a regulated environment where availability, auditability and player protection are not optional.\nAbout the role\nOur backend layer is a set of Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) services, written in Java, that sit between\nour clients and the vendor platform. They aggregate, shape and cache data for each client, handle\nboth request-response and real-time event traffic, and enforce security and regulatory rules before\nanything reaches the player.\nAs a Principal Backend Engineer you set the reference architecture for these services and are\naccountable for how fast and how reliably they run. You will write production code, make the hard\ndesign calls, and raise the bar for every backend engineer who joins after you.\nWhat you will own\nOur backend layer is a set of Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) services, written in Java, that sit between\nour clients and the vendor platform. They aggregate, shape and cache data for each client, handle\nboth request-response and real-time event traffic, and enforce security and regulatory rules before\nanything reaches the player.\nAs Principal Backend Engineer you set the reference architecture for these services and are\naccountable for how fast and how reliably they run. You will write production code, make the hard\ndesign calls, and raise the bar for every backend engineer who joins after you.\nScope\n. BFF services and their APIs to all clients.\nIntegration with EveryMatrix and other vendor APIs and event streams.\nCaching, data stores and messaging used by our backend.\nBackend observability, SLOs, load and capacity testing.\nMust have\nSeniority: 10+ years building backend systems, with at least 3 in a lead, staff or principal role\nsetting architecture across multiple services.\n• Java at depth: modern Java (17+), JVM internals, memory and garbage-collection tuning,\nconcurrency (including virtual threads and reactive or non-blocking I/O), and profiling under load.\n• Design patterns and architecture: practical command of GoF and enterprise integration\npatterns, hexagonal or clean architecture, domain-driven design, and API gateway / BFF patterns,\nplus the judgement to know when not to use them.\n• Spring Boot (or equivalent framework) in production at scale.\n• Sync and async communication: REST and gRPC; event streaming and messaging (Kafka,\nPub/Sub or similar); real-time push to clients (WebSockets or server-sent events); delivery\nguarantees, ordering and idempotency.\n• Caching: distributed caches (Redis or similar), multi-level caching, invalidation strategies, and\nHTTP/CDN cache semantics.\n• Data: relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar) including query and index tuning, and the\nconsistency trade-offs of distributed data.\n• Performance engineering: load and soak testing, latency analysis at p95/p99, capacity planning,\nand evidence of having made a production system measurably faster.\n• Availability and observability: SLOs and error budgets, metrics, tracing and logging\n(OpenTelemetry, Prometheus or similar), and hands-on incident leadership.\n• Cloud-native delivery: containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD and safe deployment practices (canary,\nfeature flags, rollback).\n• Security: OAuth2/OIDC, token handling, input validation and secure-by-default API design.\nStrongly Preferred\n. Other backend languages: Kotlin, Go or Node.js. We choose the BFF language per service, so breadth matters.\nRegulated or high-traffic real-time domains: iGaming, sports betting, payments, trading or similar.\nExperience with EveryMatrix or comparable iGaming platforms (wallet, cashier, casino ggregation, sportsbook feeds).\nGoogle Cloud (GKE, Cloud Run, Memorystore, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL), Cloudflare, ArgoCD and Terraform.\nServer-driven UI or aggregation APIs serving several client platforms.\nCompliance-driven engineering: DGA SCP, PCI DSS, ISO 27001 or GDPR\nWhat success looks like\nFirst 30 days\nUnderstand the current BFF services, vendor integrations and traffic profile.\nEstablish a performance and availability baseline and publish the gaps.\nShip production code in at least one BFF service.\nFirst 90 days\nPublish the BFF reference architecture covering service structure, sync/async patterns, caching\nand data rules.\n. Agree SLOs for player-critical journeys (login, deposit, bet placement, game launch) with\ndashboards and alerts behind them.\nRun the first full load test against launch traffic forecasts and close the critical findings.\nBy launch\nBFF layer meets agreed SLOs under forecast peak load, with tested degradation paths for every vendor dependency.\nRunbooks and on-call in place; backend engineers designing new services to the reference architecture without your involvement\nCompensation\nCompetitive base salary. Full range and benefits shared at first conversation.\nInterview process\nIntro call (30 min): role, team and your background.\nTechnical interview (2 hrs): a deep dive on Java, the JVM, concurrency and design patterns,\nusing a system you built; system design of a BFF for a real-time sportsbook or casino journey\ncovering sync and async flows, caching, data and SLOs; and a pair-programming exercise on a\nrealistic backend problem.\nLeadership and values with the CTO and HR (45 min).","description_format":"text","description_chars":5608,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":10,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[{"language":"Danish","level":"All levels","optional":false}]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Sports Betting","iGaming & Gambling"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-11-04T16:15:41Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":2,"expected_fill_days":28,"reasons":["conf:3","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-11-07T05:47:08Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/yes-principal-software-engineer-backend","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/yes-principal-software-engineer-backend.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-07T14:04:02Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":17677,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-08T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1886517},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1886517"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fyes-principal-software-engineer-backend"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fyes-principal-software-engineer-backend"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fyes-principal-software-engineer-backend"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/yes-principal-software-engineer-backend\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fyes-principal-software-engineer-backend"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3753751}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"yes.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3753751},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
