Our team develops and maintains the software platforms, microservices, and automation solutions that enable the provisioning, configuration, and management of Zayo's large-scale telecommunications network infrastructure.\nIn this role, you will design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions that automate complex network operations and improve the efficiency and reliability of network service delivery. You will work primarily in Python, developing microservices that communicate through gRPC APIs defined using Protocol Buffers (Protobuf), and leverage Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) to automate network device configuration and service provisioning.\nThe ideal candidate has a strong foundation in software development, experience building and maintaining production applications, and is able to solve complex technical challenges. You will work across a broad range of teams to provide perspective on technical design and take ownership of software development tasks and features.\nKey Responsibilities\nSoftware Development & Architecture\nDesign, develop, test, and maintain Python-based applications and microservices supporting network automation and orchestration.\nDevelop and integrate gRPC-based services using Protocol Buffers to define APIs and service contracts.\nImplement new features, enhancements, and integrations across software platforms.\nBuild reusable software components, libraries, and APIs that integrate with internal systems and network infrastructure.\nWrite clean, maintainable, well-documented, and thoroughly tested code following SDLC best practices.\nTroubleshoot software defects, investigate application issues, and implement reliable solutions.\nParticipate in technical design discussions and contribute ideas for improving application architecture, performance, and maintainability.\nCollaborate with technical and non-technical teams to develop solutions.\nNetwork Automation & Orchestration\nDevelop and maintain automation solutions using Cisco NSO, including service packages, service models, and integrations with network devices.\nBuild software that interfaces with Cisco NSO APIs to support network configuration, provisioning, and service lifecycle operations.\nWork with network engineering and operations teams to understand network requirements and translate them into automated workflows.\nDevelop and enhance automation that reduces manual configuration, minimizes errors, and accelerates service delivery.\nTroubleshoot and resolve issues involving network automation workflows, system integrations, and device interactions.\nDevelop an understanding of Zayo’s network infrastructure, provisioning processes, and operational requirements.\nDevOps & Infrastructure\nDevelop and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines supporting automated testing, application builds, and deployment.\nBuild, package, and deploy containerized applications using Docker, with services hosted through Docker Swarm.\nAssist with monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the reliability of production microservices.\nImplement automated tests and participate in code reviews to ensure software quality.\nSupport continuous improvement of development workflows, deployment processes, and application reliability.\nWork within established operational practices to identify and resolve production issues.\nCollaboration & Professional Growth\nParticipate in an Agile development environment, including sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, code reviews, and retrospectives.\nCollaborate with software engineers, network engineers, product stakeholders, and operations teams to deliver automation solutions.\nTake ownership of assigned features and development tasks, delivering quality solutions with appropriate testing and documentation.\nParticipate in peer code reviews and contribute constructive feedback.\nWork with senior engineers to improve technical skills, learn new technologies, and develop a deeper understanding of the team’s systems and architecture.\nContribute to engineering best practices, technical documentation, and ongoing improvements to software quality and maintainability.\nCommunicate technical progress, challenges, and potential solutions clearly to team members and stakeholders.\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.\n3+ years of professional software development experience, including experience developing, testing, and maintaining production applications.\nProficiency in Python, including object-oriented programming, common Python libraries, and software development best practices.\nExperience developing or integrating APIs and backend services.\nFamiliarity with microservices architecture and distributed application concepts.\nUnderstanding of software design principles, data structures, and common programming patterns.\nExperience using Git-based source control and collaborative development workflows.\nFamiliarity with CI/CD processes, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices.\nExperience working with Docker or similar containerization technologies.\nExperience debugging applications, investigating software issues, and implementing fixes.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative engineering team.\nAbility to independently complete well-defined development tasks and contribute to moderately complex technical projects.\nPreferred Qualifications\n Experience developing gRPC services using Protocol Buffers (Protobuf).\n Hands-on experience with Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO), including Python APIs, service packages, or YANG models.\nExperience with GitLab CI/CD and Docker Swarm.\nFamiliarity with network automation technologies and protocols such as NETCONF, RESTCONF, SSH, and YANG.\nUnderstanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, MPLS, and BGP.\nExperience with network provisioning, configuration management, or service activation systems.\nFamiliarity with distributed systems concepts such as service-to-service communication, asynchronous processing, retries, and error handling.\nExperience with Linux systems and command-line
