Our technology has the potential to change how robots, vehicles, autonomous systems, industrial machines, and defence platforms understand movement in the physical world.\nWe are an early-stage, VC-backed deep-tech company based in Bristol. The team is small, ambitious, and highly technical. We are building something difficult from the ground up, which means the lab matters. The way we build, test, organise, automate, document, and maintain our setups directly shapes how quickly the company can move.\nWe are looking for someone who wants to be part of that journey.\nThe Role\nWe are hiring an Engineering Lab Technician to support the build, test, maintenance, and day-to-day running of our engineering lab.\nThis is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys practical engineering. You will work across mechanical fixtures, 3D printed parts, soldered assemblies, test equipment, electrical setups, optical and sensor rigs, and Python-based automation.\nSome of the work will be repetitive. Some of it will be detailed and delicate. Some of it will involve debugging things that do not work the first time. That is part of building real hardware.\nThe right person will enjoy making things work properly. They will be careful, reliable, curious, and willing to learn. They will take pride in doing practical work well, whether that means building a fixture, soldering a cable, automating a test, checking inventory, or helping an engineer get a setup running before a deadline.\nThis is a good role for someone who wants to grow inside a startup and become trusted as a central part of the engineering team.\nWhat You’ll Help Build\nYou will help us build the practical foundation of the company: the lab systems, test setups, fixtures, tools, scripts, and routines that allow the engineering team to move faster.\nYou will not be sitting far away from the technology. You will be close to the hardware, close to the experiments, and close to the problems we are trying to solve.\nOver time, we want this person to become someone who understands how the lab works, knows where things are, knows what needs improving, and can help the team turn ideas into working setups quickly and carefully.\nWhat You’ll Be Responsible For\nBuilding and improving lab setups\nYou will help build, modify, and maintain test setups used by the engineering team. This may include mechanical fixtures, 3D printed parts, soldered cables, electrical test boards, optical mounts, sensor rigs, and general lab infrastructure.\nYou will also help improve these setups over time so they become easier to use, more reliable, and more repeatable.\nSupporting practical delivery\nHardware development depends on practical tasks being finished properly and on time. You will help make sure fixtures, test setups, parts, measurements, scripts, and lab checks are ready when the team needs them.\nThis role will suit someone who likes the satisfaction of closing things out and keeping momentum going.\nDebugging and fixing things\nYou will help diagnose practical problems with equipment, drivers, test scripts, connections, cables, boards, fixtures, and measurement setups.\nWe do not expect you to know everything already. We do expect you to enjoy working things out. A good technician is someone who can check the obvious things, read documentation, test assumptions, isolate the issue, and explain clearly what they have found.\nAutomating repetitive work\nWhere we are doing the same task repeatedly, we want to make it easier, faster, and less error-prone.\nYou will help write Python scripts for measurement capture, data logging, instrument control, simple analysis, test routines, and lab workflow improvements.\nYou do not need to be a software engineer, but you should be comfortable using Python as a practical tool.\nKeeping the lab organised and reliable\nYou will help maintain inventory, track components, check equipment, manage consumables, keep spares organised, and make sure the lab stays usable as the company grows.\nA well-run lab gives the whole team more speed and confidence. This role is central to that.\nHealth and safety\nYou will help keep the lab safe, tidy, and well-managed. We can train the details of our health and safety procedures, but we are looking for someone with a careful and responsible attitude from day one.\nWhat You’ll Be Doing Day to Day\nYou may be asked to:\nDesign and 3D print mechanical fixtures, brackets, mounts, jigs, and test aids\n\nSolder wires, connectors, simple boards, and test assemblies\n\nUse oscilloscopes, logic analysers, power supplies, signal generators, laser drivers, and other lab equipment\n\nSet up and run repeatable electrical, mechanical, optical, or sensor tests\n\nDebug equipment, scripts, drivers, loose connections, noisy signals, or unreliable measurements\n\nWrite Python scripts to automate measurements, logging, analysis, or instrument control\n\nHelp keep inventory records accurate and make sure critical parts are available\n\nMaintain lab equipment and flag issues early\n\nSupport engineers during test campaigns, prototype builds, and measurement workflows\n\nDocument procedures so tests can be repeated by someone else\n\nSuggest practical improvements to how the lab runs\n\nWhat We’re Looking For\nWe are looking for someone who is practical, careful, and motivated by real engineering work.\nYou should be someone who:\nLikes working with your hands\n\nTakes care with details\n\nCan do repetitive tasks properly and consistently\n\nManages your time well\n\nTakes deadlines seriously\n\nEnjoys fixing things\n\nIs comfortable learning independently\n\nCommunicates clearly when something is blocked\n\nDocuments work so that others can follow it\n\nWants to grow with the company as the lab and technology mature\n\nYou do not need to arrive as the finished article. You do need to bring the right attitude: hands-on, reliable, curious, and careful.\nUseful But Not Essential\nThese would be helpful, but we can train the right person:\nPhotonics or optics awareness\n\nExperience with MEMS, sensors, or semiconductor technology\n\nEmbedded hardware design\n\nPCB design versus simple bring up\n\nExperience in a startup, small engineering team, or fast-moving research group\n\nQualifications\nWe are open to different backgrounds.\nYou may have a degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship, Masters, or equivalent hands-on experience in engineering, physics, electronics, mechanical design, robotics, instrumentation, or a related technical area.\nWhat matters most is that you can work safely, carefully, and effectively in a real lab.\nWhat Success Looks Like\nIn this role, success means:\nThe lab becomes more organised, reliable, and easier to work in\n\nTest setups are built, maintained, and improved on time\n\nRepetitive work becomes more automated\n\nEngineers can move faster because practical blockers are removed\n\nEquipment issues are spotted early and handled properly\n\nMeasurements become more repeatable because procedures are clear\n\nYou become someone the team trusts to help turn ideas into working hardware\n\nWhy Join Us\nThis is a chance to join a deep-tech company at an early and important stage.\nYou will be working on technology that sits across photonics, MEMS, sensors, robotics, navigation, autonomy, and defence. You will get exposure to difficult engineering problems and work closely with a team trying to build a new sensor architecture from the ground up.\nFor the right person, this role can grow. As the lab grows, the responsibility can grow too.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7708,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Hardware","Sensors & Transducers","Optical Communications"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-02T16:47:44Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":8,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.276,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":94,"expected_fill_days":33,"reasons":["conf:3","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-10-10T05:45:15Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/zero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/zero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-11T01:24:59Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"search","counted_by":"address","units_charged":0,"used_today":0,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":null,"resets_at":"2026-10-12T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3798709},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3798709"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fzero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fzero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fzero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/zero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fzero-point-motion-engineering-lab-technician"}]}
