It is about turning fabrication intuition and experimental rigor into system-level learning.\nThe Role\nYou will be deeply hands-on with active photonic test setups, automated measurement, data analysis, and debugging complex experimental behaviour involving:\noptical power, phase, and frequency\n\ndetector noise and bandwidth\n\nlaser dynamics, stability, and drift\n\nnonlinear or bias-dependent effects\n\nCleanroom experience is valuable - but your impact here comes from how you design experiments, interrogate data, and extract physical insight, not from running processes.\nWhat You’ll Do\nExperimental ownership (active & nonlinear systems)\nDesign, build, and improve experiments involving:\nlasers and optical sources\n\nphotodetectors and readout chains\n\nactive PIC components and biasing\n\nnonlinear or power-dependent effects\n\nRun automated wafer-scale and lot-scale measurements\n\nCharacterise behaviour across:\nbias points\n\noptical power\n\ntemperature\n\ntime (drift, ageing, stability).\n\nWork late when experiments demand it - then automate so you don’t repeat heroics\n\nInvent new experimental or analysis approaches when behaviour is messy or non-ideal\n\nData & analysis (non-negotiable)\nAnalyse large experimental datasets with strong statistical discipline\n\nQuantify and separate:\nnoise sources\n\ndrift mechanisms\n\nnonlinearities\n\ncross-coupling effects.\n\nCorrelate results to:\ndesign intent\n\nsimulation assumptions\n\nfabrication and process variation\n\nmetrology and electrical readout.\n\nWrite substantial Python for:\ndata processing\n\nautomation\n\nexperiment control\n\nmodel validation\n\nFabrication-aware insight\nUse fabrication knowledge to:\ninterpret variation intelligently\n\nidentify real yield and performance limiters\n\ndistinguish process effects from physics\n\nAvoid the trap of blaming fabrication for lack of understanding\n\nFeed insight back into design, simulation, and architecture decisions\n\nCross-domain collaboration\nWork closely with photonics design, process, electronics, FPGA, and systems engineers\n\nEnsure experimental results directly inform:\ndesign updates\n\nsimulation models\n\nbiasing strategies\n\nfuture system architectures\n\nRequired Background\nYou must have:\nStrong hands-on experimental experience with photonic systems, including:\nlasers\n\nphotodetectors\n\nPICs or fibre-based waveguides\n\nComfort working with active and bias-dependent behaviour, not just passive components\n\nFabrication or process-development experience used analytically\n\nDemonstrated Python coding ability beyond trivial scripts\n\nComfort handling large datasets and statistics\n\nComfort with electronics and lab instrumentation\n\nWillingness to rapidly upskill in design-experiment-system correlation\n\nExperience with nonlinear optics, laser locking, noise characterisation, or optoelectronic readout is a strong plus.\nWho This Role Is For\nThis role is for:\nExperimentalists who care about how photonic systems actually behave in operation\n\nEngineers who enjoy debugging noise, drift, instability, and nonlinear effects\n\nPeople who automate instead of repeating manual work\n\nBuilders who want to push photonics toward production reality\n\nEngineers with high integrity and strong internal standards\n\nWhat This Role Is Not\nThis is not:\na cleanroom operator role\n\na passive-component-only measurement job\n\na simulation-first, experiment-second position\n\na role for manual, spreadsheet-driven analysis\n\nWhat Success Looks Like\nAfter 6-12 months:\nLasers, detectors, and active PICs are characterised across wafers and lots\n\nNonlinearities, noise sources, and drift mechanisms are understood and quantified\n\nExperimental results directly drive design, simulation, and biasing updates\n\nMeasurement, metrology, and electrical data are linked coherently\n\nTest infrastructure becomes a competitive advantage\n\nLearning cycles around active photonic behaviour are dramatically shorter\n\nWorking with us\nCompensation: Our framework is built on fairness and transparency, with regular reviews to reflect growth and performance. \n\nBenefits: Share options, pension, and private medical insurance.\n\nCulture: A deep-tech rocketship backed by leading investors. We’re building breakthrough technology with real commercial impact. Pace is high. Standards are higher.\n\nZero Point Motion is determined to foster belonging and empowerment at work. We are committed to providing a work environment where there’s a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, and everyone is treated with respect. Equity, diversity and inclusion are central to our mission, and we strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply.
