Overview

The Astera Institute is a non-profit research organisation that funds long horizon work in computing and the natural sciences outside academic and commercial incentive structures. Its programmes cover open source scientific tooling, self driving laboratories and the Obelisk effort to build machine intelligence grounded in biological principles rather than scaled language modelling. The institute supports researchers with multi year commitments and publishes its outputs openly; its funding comes from a philanthropic endowment rather than venture capital or government grants.
