Overview
Polkadot is a multi-chain protocol launched in 2020 that connects independent blockchains through a shared security and messaging layer. The network allows specialised chains to lease execution capacity from a central relay chain while remaining sovereign in their own governance and economics. Its development is coordinated by the Web3 Foundation in Zug together with Parity Technologies and a large community of independent parachain teams.
