Overview

Penn State University Press is the scholarly publishing arm of Pennsylvania State University, founded in 1956, and it publishes academic books and journals across art history, philosophy, religious studies, medieval studies, political science and Latin American studies. Like most university presses it operates on a scale that would be commercially impossible without institutional support, publishing monographs whose print runs are measured in hundreds because scholarly value rather than sales determines what is worth publishing. Based at University Park, Pennsylvania, it also hosts journals for scholarly societies and participates in open access publishing programmes.

Products

Digital Collections
Electronic editions and databases licensed to university libraries. Library licensing is the main channel through which academic publishing reaches readers at all, since almost nobody buys a monograph personally.
psupress.org
Open Access Programmes
Participation in library-funded models that make scholarship freely readable. Funding has to come from somewhere when the reader stops paying, and reconciling that is the central problem in academic publishing.
psupress.org
Academic Journals
Journals published on behalf of scholarly societies and research communities. Society partnerships supply steady subscription revenue that individual monographs could never come close to generating alone.

Scholarly Monographs
Academic books across art history, philosophy, religion and area studies. Print runs are measured in hundreds, and the press exists because scholarly value rather than commercial return determines what gets published.
