Workaround for a macOS bin that refuses to empty. Sometimes when I tell macOS to empty the bin (“trash” if you’re United Statesian) it refuses with a baffling error message: I have no idea what causes this. One solution is to restart the affected Mac – but that’s obviously very disruptive.

The Apple Calculator Language
While perusing Jef Raskin's documents from the early days of Apple (1979 predominately), I came across a curious one: a "calculator" language that Jef proposed. What's particularly interesting is that it's presented in the context of programming languages

Claude Opus 5 is limited to a 0.2M token context window by default
Opus 4.8 and earlier use a 1M token context window (on any paid plan, at least). So it's surprising that Anthropic quietly reduced this by 80% with Opus 5. You can get the 1M token context window back, though - you just have to enable Usage Credits. You d

Apple's notarytool can't handle ZIP64 files
In short: if you have any file in your app (or whatever it is you're trying to get Apple to sign) that is over 4 GiB, you must use a disk image (DMG) to package it for notarytool, not a zip file. This is because support for files larger than 4 GiB require

Claude Says No
I strongly suspect Claude's Mac app is written by Claude. That's not a compliment. There's the non-native GUI, though of course that doesn't tell you much in this day and age. It's obviously just Chromium or something similar (hell, you can right-click on

Asus ProArt PA32QCV
I'll cut to the chase: it's a nice resolution upgrade from an Apple or LG 5k display. But that's about it - in every other visual respect (brightness, contrast, etc) it's basically the same or marginally worse (see Matte-ugly). Though the built-in KVM is

SSH waits for background jobs to exit only in non-pseudo-terminal mode
Ugh, this one caused me days of head-scratching. $ ssh somehost somehost$ sleep 15 & somehost$ exit$ ssh somehost somehost$ sleep 15 & somehost$ exit If you run that command sequence, you'll find that it makes the SSH connection and then exits immediately

"rn" is one Character in Swift
From the department of "how did I not realise this sooner?!": 1 "r".count $R0: Int = 1 2 "n".count $R1: Int = 1 3 "rn".count $R2: Int = 1 Yes, Swift treats the two bytes "rn" as a single character. This is actually super convenient a lot of the time, beca

6k display comparison
It's very clear that Apple were going for peak brightness above all else. Nobody else has even tried to make a bright 6k display - in fact, every non-Apple 6k display is outright dim by modern display standards - they're barely brighter than the original
