We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical pillar across our engineering teams. This role is ideal for a highly experienced backend engineer who thrives on solving hard problems, mentoring others, and guiding architecture across multiple domains. You'll be a multiplier operating independently, shaping technical direction, and partnering with engineers and product teams to raise the bar across the organization.
You'll work across squads to improve system performance, reliability, and scalability, while owning high-impact projects that support our Conversational Email (CE) platform. Whether it's unblocking performance bottlenecks, leading design for new backend services, or reducing tech debt, your contributions will have far-reaching impact.
Responsibilities:
- Own and lead design for major backend systems across CE, focusing on performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Collaborate with multiple teams to address cross-cutting concerns (e. g., shared libraries, infra patterns, tech debt, security).
- Tackle escalated production issues, security vulnerabilities, and architectural decisions.
- Contribute to and guide implementation of large features (e. g., platform-wide improvements, big bets within CE).
- Provide technical mentorship to engineers across levels and help raise the engineering bar.
- Drive documentation, performance profiling, and system-level debugging practices.
- Work with EMs and PMs to shape the technical roadmap and support long-term platform health.
Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience in backend engineering with deep expertise in designing complex distributed systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with Python, Ruby, and cloud platforms like AWS.
- Excellent system design and architecture skills.
- Comfortable debugging performance issues, tackling infra and security problems, and driving org-wide improvements.
- Strong mentorship and communication skills, with a track record of influencing across teams.
- Bonus: experience with SingleStore, email deliverability systems (e. g., SMTP), or platform architecture at scale.
