Job Summary
As a Research Engineer in the Applied Research & Technology team at Acuity Intelligent Spaces, you will sit at the intersection of applied machine learning research, software engineering, and spatial intelligent environments. You will architect, prototype, and deploy intelligent software components that transform buildings and room environments into responsive, context-aware spaces.
In this role, you will work on productionizing machine learning and computer vision models while integrating with AV control infrastructure (such as QSC/Q-SYS ecosystems), Distech Controls, and Atrius IoT platforms to drive next-generation building intelligence and smart room automation.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Applied Machine Learning & Engineering: Design, build, test, and deploy efficient machine learning pipelines and models tailored for real-time inference in edge and cloud-connected spatial environments.
- Computer Vision Integration: Implement vision-based applications (e.g., occupancy analytics, spatial perception, multi-modal signal processing) to enhance physical space context and automated room control.
- AV & Systems Integration: Develop software integrations connecting AI/ML pipelines with audio-visual ecosystems (QSC / Q-SYS control, audio signal flow, and smart room AV infrastructure).
- Software Architecture & Development: Write clean, maintainable, modular production-grade code (Python, C/C++, Go, or TypeScript) for edge devices, middleware microservices, and API integrations.
- Prototyping to Production: Build end-to-end functional prototypes and proof-of-concepts, validating spatial intelligence algorithms before transitioning them into scaleable platform services.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with hardware, firmware, software platform, and product management teams to translate research concepts into commercial solutions.
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Software Engineering: 3+ years of experience in software development with strong expertise in Python and solid object-oriented design principles.
- Machine Learning Engineering: Experience developing, fine-tuning, and deploying ML models using frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX, or TensorRT for edge or real-time applications.
- Computer Vision Knowledge: Practical understanding of basic computer vision fundamentals, image processing, object detection, or spatial sensing architectures (e.g., OpenCV, spatial tracking).
- AV & Control Infrastructure: Familiarity with AV/C technologies, particularly QSC / Q-SYS core architectures, Lua scripting, or control API integrations.
- API Development & Networking: Experience with REST APIs, gRPC, MQTT, WebSockets, and network communication protocols used in AV and IoT devices.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with multi-modal AI models, speech processing, or audio analytics.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, edge deployment frameworks, or microservices architecture.
- Experience integrating with smart building protocols (BACnet, Modbus) or commercial IoT frameworks (Atrius, Distech Controls).
- Exposure to sensor fusion, real-time spatial analytics, or speaker-tracking visual integrations.
