AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

Projects may include high-profile developments and transportation improvements involving public agencies, community stakeholders and other interested parties. The Civil Engineer will also contribute to the review and implementation of transportation policies, plans, criteria and technical documents associated with development review and transportation system planning.

Key responsibilities

  • Scope and review transportation impact analyses, traffic operations studies and supporting technical documentation for proposed development projects.
  • Evaluate existing and future transportation conditions using traffic engineering principles, operational analyses, transportation models and available traffic data.
  • Review traffic analysis assumptions, methodologies, trip-generation estimates, intersection and corridor operations and supporting engineering documentation.
  • Evaluate proposed transportation improvements and recommend appropriate multimodal measures to address anticipated impacts to the transportation network.
  • Review traffic operations and simulation analyses developed using Synchro, VISSIM or comparable transportation analysis tools, as applicable.
  • Apply appropriate transportation engineering standards, criteria, manuals and technical guidance when reviewing development-related transportation analyses.
  • Coordinate with applicants, developers, consultants and multidisciplinary project teams to communicate technical requirements, resolve engineering comments and support completion of transportation reviews.
  • Collaborate with public agencies, internal project teams, stakeholders and partner organizations on transportation development matters.
  • Evaluate transportation considerations affecting motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and other roadway users.
  • Support the preparation and review of transportation policies, plans, criteria, procedures and technical documents used to guide development review and transportation planning activities.
  • Prepare clear technical findings, recommendations, review comments and supporting documentation for project teams, agency staff and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in technical meetings and presentations involving applicants, agencies, stakeholders, boards or commissions, as needed.
  • Manage multiple concurrent technical reviews and assignments while maintaining established schedules and quality requirements.

Minimum requirements

  • BA/BS + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in civil engineering, transportation engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience performing or reviewing transportation engineering studies, traffic operations analyses, transportation impact analyses or comparable technical transportation evaluations.
  • Experience with intersection, corridor or network-level traffic operations analysis.
  • Experience using Synchro, VISSIM or comparable traffic analysis and simulation software.
  • Experience working with transportation agencies, municipalities or other public-sector clients on transportation engineering projects.
  • Experience applying transportation engineering standards, criteria, manuals or agency-specific technical guidance.
  • Familiarity with trip-generation methodologies, including the ITE Trip Generation Manual.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with multimodal transportation considerations involving vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit.
  • Familiarity with state or municipal transportation plans, development criteria, design guidance or traffic control standards.
  • Experience coordinating multiple transportation projects, technical studies or engineering reviews concurrently.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, agency staff, consultants and other internal and external stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to explain transportation engineering analyses and recommendations to technical and nontechnical audiences.
