What is the Opportunity?

Safer. Faster. Smarter. Aecon Civil is a recognized leader in the infrastructure market, backed by strong self-perform capabilities and deep local expertise. We play a key role in building and enhancing infrastructure across Canada, the U.S., and an expanding international footprint, improving everyday life through the roads, bridges, tunnels, and transit systems that connect communities. With more than a century of experience and a full suite of integrated services, Aecon is a trusted partner in delivering complex civil projects, including transit expansions, tunnels, airports, ports, highways, and large-scale site development.

The Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance has been selected by Metrolinx as the development partner for Package 1: Civil & Utilities of the Hamilton LRT project. As the construction partner, Aecon provides construction expertise and resources as part of an integrated alliance team working collaboratively to advance design, cost, constructability, and construction schedules.

The Hamilton LRT will deliver 14 kilometres of modern, reliable, and frequent LRT service through Hamilton’s downtown core. More than a transit project, it represents a significant investment in how the city connects, grows, and moves.

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Engineering Manager will support the Hamilton LRT project through the development of construction means and methods for complex civil and utility works. The role will focus on areas including elevated guideways, grade separations, bridge deconstruction, roadway construction, and deep excavations for utility installations within a congested urban environment.

The successful candidate will also support the planning and design coordination of temporary works during the development phase and provide execution support and supervision as the project progresses into early works and implementation. This is an opportunity to apply strong technical and constructability expertise while contributing to innovative solutions for one of Ontario’s major transit infrastructure projects.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Establish safe and efficient construction methodologies for temporary and permanent works, including structural calculations, technical reports, method statements, supporting specifications, and risk assessments.
  • Develop construction sequencing and methodologies that support safe, efficient, and effective project execution.
  • Provide construction teams with technical guidance related to work methods and constructability requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve construction processes, productivity, sequencing, and overall execution while maintaining safety and quality objectives.
  • Coordinate requirements for tools, equipment, and materials in collaboration with the Logistics team.
  • Define temporary systems required to support construction activities, including drainage, formwork, and excavation support.
  • Assist with the development of site layout, installation, and traffic management plans.
  • Develop preliminary designs and concepts for temporary works, including excavation support systems in coordination with geotechnical engineers.
  • Develop construction methods and specialized equipment requirements for lifting, launching, handling, transportation, and installation activities.
  • Coordinate external temporary works design consultants in the development of Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings.
  • Participate in constructability reviews, value engineering, and the development of technical alternatives.
  • Evaluate solutions considering safety, schedule, cost, risk, and constructability.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary workshops focused on optimizing construction methods and execution strategies.
  • Collaborate with technical experts and multidisciplinary teams across multiple regions.
  • Prepare material take-offs and bills of materials, as required.
  • Interface with clients, designers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Support drafters in the appropriate use of technical standards, tools, and software.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
  • 7+ years of experience in Methods Engineering, Temporary Works Engineering, construction methods engineering, or construction execution engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methodologies, site constraints, and constructability principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop practical and innovative engineering solutions to complex construction challenges.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively within large, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
