You’ll work alongside geologists, hydrogeologists, reservoir and wellbore engineers, and environmental specialists to coordinate and review proposals holistically, clearly articulate risks, and make recommendations that inform regulatory decisions.

At the AER, you’ll do meaningful work that benefits Albertans while continuing to grow your technical and regulatory expertise as part of a team that values continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and a healthy work-life balance.

Draft technical recommendations and conditions to ensure compliance with AER regulatory requirements and applicable legislation.
  • Act as a primary liaison with representatives from industry, AER staff and government during the application review process to respond to information requests with clear, concise review process, facility and environmental information.
  • Perform desktop surveillance, including review of Directive 054 performance reports, and occasional travel to sites to ensure operational risks associated with development have been mitigated.
  • Support sector initiatives, enterprise projects and continuous improvement efforts that enhance the application process.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Petroleum, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering.
  • 5-7 years of related experience in process, environmental or facility/industrial engineering within the energy sector, with preference for direct in situ oil sands experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech) designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) designation with Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET), or eligibility to be registered as such, is required.
  • Assets include a strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework and associated legislation across the energy lifecycle, particularly EPEA and OSCA, and how they apply to oil sands developments, and a solid understanding of fundamental reservoir engineering concepts and methods.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong written (including technical writing), verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences, build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and facilitate meetings.
  • Beginner to intermediate awareness of project management principles demonstrating well-developed organizational and analytical skills, the ability to meet deadlines.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email [email protected]. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Opportunity to make a difference and be part of a performance driven team that is responsible for the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of Alberta’s energy and mineral resources.
  • The ability to leverage your expertise and critical thinking skills to contribute in wide-ranging, challenging, and complex work.
  • Flexible work options and hours, aligned with organizational policies.
  • Health spending account (HSA) and vacation entitlement available from your first day.
