The AI Security Institute is the United Kingdom government body that tests advanced artificial intelligence models for risks relevant to national security and public safety. Its researchers run pre deployment evaluations together with frontier laboratories, covering cyber offence capability, chemical and biological uplift, autonomous replication and the robustness of model safeguards. The institute publishes its evaluation methodology and the Inspect open source testing framework, and it funds external alignment research through a dedicated grant programme.

About the AI Security Institute

The AI Security Institute is the world's largest and best-funded team dedicated to understanding advanced AI risks and translating that knowledge into action. We’re in the heart of the UK government with direct lines to No. 10 (the Prime Minister's office), and we work with frontier developers and governments globally.

We’re here because governments are critical for advanced AI going well, and UK AISI is uniquely positioned to mobilise them. With our resources, unique agility and international influence, this is the best place to shape both AI development and government action.

The deadline for applying to this role is Sunday 11th October 2026, end of day, anywhere on Earth.  Team   Description

The Human Influence (HI) team focuses on the ways in which AI can influence human beliefs, decisions, and behaviour. A substantial class of AI risk operates through people. AI systems can persuade people to change their beliefs and to take action; can build trusting relationships with people in order to exploit them; can extract private information from them; and can hold delegated ownership of high-stakes decisions.

Our work is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on methods from computational social science, AI safety and security, cognitive and behavioural science, machine learning, and data science. Typical projects include running rigorous human-AI interaction studies and randomised controlled trials, building evaluations and benchmarks that track AI capabilities across model releases, eliciting model capabilities through fine-tuning and self-play, and developing datasets to monitor real-world risk exposure and severity.

Role Description

We are looking for anEngineering Leadtomanage and oversee a growing team of engineers. The team’s work includes:developing new evaluations and technical capability demonstrations, building robust data pipelines, drivingworld-leading research studies using complex multi-agent setups, finetuning LLMs (>100B parameters), and building custom Reinforcement Learning environments.

Projects the Engineering Lead might lead or deliver as individual contributor include:

  • Designing the scalable system architectureunderpinning the repeatable delivery and analysis of model evaluationsand benchmarks.
  • Building an automated pipeline that recruits participants and runs a human-AI experiment end-to-end, to track how a given capability shifts with each new model release.
  • Designing and building a toolkit for multi-agent studies, which allows researchers to run synthetic as well as human-in-the-loop studies seamlessly and with performance guarantees.
  • Delivering ambitious, engineering-heavy research projects on Human Influence topics, for instance by leveragingpost-training techniques on a large compute cluster.

This is a leadership role. Competitive candidates will be strong engineerswith a track recordof leading engineeringprojectsfrom scoping to production. The Human Influence Engineering Lead willwork withHuman Influence team leadership and seniorAISI stakeholders to develop and deliver an engineering roadmap for the Human Influence team, and will lead and grow the HI Engineering function, including managing Research and Software Engineers.

Who we'relooking for

This is a multidisciplinary team, andsuccessful candidates come from a widerange of backgrounds.

Essential

General:

  • Experienceleadingacomplex engineering or research project from scoping to deployment or publication
  • Clear understanding and views on how AI and coding assistants should change how an engineering team works and interacts with research teams
  • Clear understanding of the current AI safety literature, and an interest in topics relevant to Human Influence
  • Clear and consistent communication

Research and engineering:

  • Experience translating research questions into reproducible engineering tasks
  • Proven experience working with non-technical stakeholders to support a product or research roadmap, e.g.,leading to a product with actual users, benchmarks and evaluations, or a research paper
  • Clear grasp of software design concepts, especially for cloud deployments and databases, e.g. using Docker, Kubernetes, orAWS primitives-production experience preferred
  • Writing scalableandmaintainable production code in (at least) Python
  • Experience building or finetuning an ML model, ideally an LLM, using common libraries like PyTorch, Keras, JAX, or custom code

Desirable

  • Experienceshipping an AI safety pipeline to production (e.g. evaluations, monitoring, serving custom models), going beyond research prototypes
  • Experience using data to answer complex research questions, e.g. by scoping, training, and validatinga classifier or finetuned LLM
  • Experience with frontend(e.g. TypeScript)and node.js deployments
  • Line management experience of at least 1 year
  • Experience hiring and mentoring technical staff

We will review applications as they come in, so would encourage you to apply early. If you are interested in this role but do not yet have engineering leadership experience, you may want to considerouropen Research Engineer position.

Use of AI in Applications

Artificial Intelligence can be a useful tool to support your application, however, all examples and statements provided must be truthful, factually accurate and taken directly from your own experience. Where plagiarism has been identified (presenting the ideas and experiences of others, or generated by artificial intelligence, as your own) applications may be withdrawn and internal candidates may be subject to disciplinary action. Please see our candidate guidance for more information on appropriate and inappropriate use.

Internal Fraud Database

The Internal Fraud function of the Fraud, Error, Debt and Grants Function at the Cabinet Office processes details of civil servants who have been dismissed for committing internal fraud, or who would have been dismissed had they not resigned. The Cabinet Office receives the details from participating government organisations of civil servants who have been dismissed, or who would have been dismissed had they not resigned, for internal fraud. In instances such as this, civil servants are then banned for 5 years from further employment in the civil service. The Cabinet Office then processes this data and discloses a limited dataset back to DLUHC as a participating government organisations. DLUHC then carry out the pre employment checks so as to detect instances where known fraudsters are attempting to reapply for roles in the civil service. In this way, the policy is ensured and the repetition of internal fraud is prevented.  For more information please see - Internal Fraud Register.

Security

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and get  baseline personnel security standard (BPSS) clearance  before they can be appointed. Additionally, there is a strong preference for eligibility for  counter-terrorist check (CTC) clearance. Some roles may require higher levels of clearance, and we will state this by exception in the job advertisement. See our vetting charter here.

Nationality requirements

We may be able to offer roles to applicant from any nationality or background. As such we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet the standard nationality requirements (opens in a new window).

Working for the Civil Service

The  Civil Service Code (opens in a new window) sets out the standards of behaviour expected of civil servants. The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. As such, we run a Disability Confident Scheme (DCS) for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria. The Civil Service also offers a Redeployment Interview Scheme to civil servants who are at risk of redundancy, and who meet the minimum requirements for the advertised vacancy.
