Air Liquide is a French industrial gases company founded in 1902 that supplies oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon and specialty gases to industry, healthcare and electronics manufacturers. Industrial gases is an unusually attractive business: gases are expensive to transport relative to their value, so suppliers build plants next to customers under contracts running fifteen years or more, which makes local positions close to unassailable. Headquartered in Paris and listed there, it is also one of the largest producers of hydrogen and supplies the ultra-pure gases semiconductor fabs consume in enormous quantities.
