AirAsia MOVE is seeking a Staff Frontend Engineer (React Native) to lead the technical architecture, scalability, performance, and reliability of our Super App platform. As a senior Individual Contributor (IC), you will drive architectural decisions across mobile applications; collaborate closely with backend, cloud, security, trust, and product teams; and help deliver seamless travel and payment experiences to millions of users. This role requires deep expertise in React Native, mobile system architecture, performance optimization, deployment strategies, and building large-scale consumer-facing applications.
The core responsibilities for the job include the following:
Architecture and Technical Leadership:
- Define and evolve the frontend architecture strategy for AirAsia's Super App ecosystem.
- Design scalable, maintainable, and high-performing React Native applications.
- Drive system architecture discussions involving mobile, backend, cloud, and platform engineering teams.
- Establish engineering standards, coding practices, and architectural governance across teams.
- Lead technical design reviews and provide architectural guidance for critical initiatives.
Performance and Scalability:
- Optimize application performance, startup time, rendering efficiency, memory consumption, and network utilization.
- Design solutions capable of supporting millions of users across multiple geographies.
- Implement monitoring, observability, and performance measurement frameworks.
- Drive initiatives to improve app stability, reliability, and user experience.
Cloud and Backend Collaboration:
- Partner closely with backend and cloud engineering teams to design robust APIs and scalable services.
- Contribute to end-to-end solution architecture spanning frontend, backend, and cloud platforms.
- Ensure seamless integration between mobile applications and distributed backend systems.
Security, Quality, and Deployment:
- Champion mobile security best practices and secure coding standards.
- Drive security testing, vulnerability remediation, and compliance requirements.
- Establish automated testing, quality assurance, and release management practices.
- Own CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, feature rollouts, and app store releases.
Analytics and Data:
- Work closely with analytics teams to implement tracking, instrumentation, and user behavior measurement.
- Enable data-driven decision-making through robust analytics frameworks.
- Ensure accurate event tracking and performance metrics collection.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with Trust and Safety, Security, Product, Design, Backend, Cloud, and Platform teams.
- Influence technical roadmaps and drive alignment across multiple engineering organizations.
- Mentor engineers and elevate overall engineering excellence within the organization.
Requirements:
- 8-12 years of software engineering experience with at least 5/7+ years in React Native development.
- Proven experience operating as a Senior or Staff-level Individual Contributor.
- Strong expertise in React Native, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Deep understanding of mobile application architecture and system design principles.
- Experience building and scaling high-traffic consumer applications.
- Strong knowledge of performance optimization and mobile engineering best practices.
- Experience integrating mobile applications with backend services, APIs, and cloud-native platforms.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD, deployment automation, and release management.
- Strong understanding of mobile security, authentication, authorization, and security testing.
- Experience implementing analytics and event-tracking frameworks.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on Super Apps, payments, e-commerce, or travel platforms.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Familiarity with native Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift) development.
- Experience with observability, monitoring, crash analytics, and performance tooling.
- Experience working in globally distributed engineering teams.
