The Cloud Networking SRE team is within Akamai's Infrastructure Engineering & Operations organization. It designs, deploys, and ensures reliability for Akamai's core cloud networking products. These include Virtual Private Cloud, Cloud Firewall, Akamai NAT Gateway, NodeBalancer, NLB, and Multi-Cloud Networking Services, all supporting Akamai Cloud Compute. These products enable customer workloads across numerous global regions.

As a Senior II Site Reliability Engineer, ensure operational reliability for critical infrastructure like software-defined networking, firewall layers, and NAT gateways. Design observability frameworks, lead incident responses for multi-service failures, and enhance operational readiness. The stack evolves rapidly with IPv6, advanced routing, and multi-cloud features, making container orchestration exposure increasingly significant as deployments progress.

You will be responsible for:

• Overseeing reliability strategy for VPC, Cloud Firewall, and NAT Gateway, spanning design reviews, pre-rollout assessments, production sign-off, and operations.
• Designing and implementing SLO/SLI frameworks for VPC networking, firewall enforcement, and NAT services while initiating action when error budgets risk exceeding.
• Designing monitoring and observability for distributed cloud networking services, including Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards to enable efficient incident triage.
• Managing technical incident response for intricate multi-service failuresVPC connectivity, firewall propagation, NAT gateway issues, and overlay network challengesensuring root cause analysis and preventive measures.
• Reviewing design and product requirements documents, providing actionable input on operational risks, capacity needs, Day-2 concerns, and strategy gaps.
• Building automation and tooling using Python or Go that reduces operational toil and improves team-wide operational capability
• Providing technical mentorship to SRE II engineers, conducting code and configuration reviews, and enhancing the team's Site Reliability Engineering practices.
• Providing expertise in incident response for major VPC/Cloud Firewall/NAT issues, with scheduled daytime coverage to lead technical resolutions.

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

• Have extensive experience in SRE, infrastructure engineering, or platform engineering, working with large-scale distributed systems across multiple regions
• Exhibit expertise in Linux networking fundamentals, including routing, iptables/nftables, VXLAN, BGP, and packet-level diagnosis using tcpdump, netstat, tools.
• Show a track record of defining SLO/SLI frameworks, building observability platforms from scratch, and running incident management processes at cloud scale
• Develop automation and tooling with Python or Go, leveraging infrastructure-as-code expertise (Terraform or SaltStack) emphasizing operational reliability and safety.
• Lead technical initiatives across teams, mentor engineers with specific coaching outcomes, and resolve complex reliability challenges independently
• Demonstrate expertise in SRE or infrastructure engineering, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience at cloud scale
