Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The School of Public Health (SPH) and Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) are seeking an Educational Instructional Design Lead for a temporary appointment. Working across both Faculties, the position will provide leadership and hands-on expertise in curriculum development, instructional design, educational technology, faculty development, and the design and delivery of high-quality in-person, online, blended, and transnational education programs.
The role will support the University of Alberta’s transnational education activities, including academic programming delivered in partnership with Wenzhou Medical University. The successful candidate will work closely with academic leaders, instructors, program teams, and international partners to translate curriculum and program objectives into effective learning experiences across different educational, cultural, and delivery environments.
The position is intended for an experienced educational professional who can move comfortably between strategy and implementation: advising senior academic leaders, working directly with instructors, developing courses and learning resources, strengthening teaching capacity, and establishing sustainable approaches to program delivery and evaluation.
- Lead and support the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of undergraduate and graduate courses and programs across SPH and FoMD transnational delivery.
- Work collaboratively with instructors, academic leaders, instructional teams, and international partners to translate curriculum objectives into effective learning activities, assessments, instructional resources, and delivery models.
- Provide instructional design and educational development support for transnational education initiatives, including programs delivered with Wenzhou Medical University, adapting approaches appropriately for different educational, cultural, technological, and institutional environments.
- Build faculty and instructor capacity through consultation, coaching, workshops, resources, and professional development focused on evidence-informed teaching practices, instructional technologies, assessment, experiential learning, team-based learning, and adult education.
- Develop and implement approaches for evaluating teaching effectiveness, student learning, curriculum quality, and program outcomes, and use findings to recommend improvements to courses, programs, and educational delivery.
- Advise academic and administrative leadership on emerging educational technologies, instructional design practices, online and distributed learning, and sustainable approaches to supporting educational innovation across SPH and FoMD.
Required qualifications
- Master’s degree in health professions education, Global Health or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the design and delivery of online, blended, and technology-enabled learning.
- Demonstrated experience with transnational education (TNE), international academic programming, or the development and delivery of academic programs across different institutional and cultural environments.
- Experience working directly with faculty members, instructors, academic leaders, and multidisciplinary program teams to design or improve courses and programs.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives involving diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal, consultation, facilitation, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong working knowledge of learning management systems, educational technologies, and contemporary online learning tools.
Preferred / asset qualifications
- Direct experience with Wenzhou Medical University or University of Alberta-Wenzhou Medical University academic programming.
- Experience supporting transnational education or international academic partnerships in China.
- Experience in public health, medicine, health professions education, or another health-related academic environment.
- Experience designing learning for multilingual learners or academic environments where English is not the primary language of instruction.
- Experience with experiential learning, team-based learning, problem-based learning, and other active-learning approaches.
- Knowledge of digital accessibility, Universal Design for Learning, and relevant e-learning standards.
- Experience with Canvas and other University of Alberta-supported teaching and learning technologies.
This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, and an annual salary range of $68,940 to $114,943.
The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule G of the collective agreement between the University and the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
